In 1918, shortly before Dorothy Abbott was born, Jameson Francis Abbott purchased this house and moved the family from the upper west side of Manhattan. Dorothy was the first child born here to Antoinette (Schreiber) Abbott. Subsequently, five more Abbott children would be born in this house. Under the leadership of the second oldest child, Florence, the family lived here until about 1932, two years after Antoinette's death and four years after the death of Jameson. During the Depression, the house was lost when the remaining family members were unable to pay the property taxes.
