Abner Baldwin Curran

Abner Baldwin Curran

Abner Baldwin Curran, born on October 12, 1848, in New York, NY, was the last of three children from the marriage of William Curran and Emily Jane (Martin) Curran.1 After William Curran died in 1850, Emily Jane (Martin) Curran married William Benjamin Lowery.

The 1860 U.S. Census shows Abner, now age 11, living with his family in New York City, probably in the Yorkville area.2 In this census, he is listed under the Lowery ("Lourie") family name rather than as a Curran. It is likely, however, that he did not adopt the Lowery name because we find him in subsequent records still using the Curran surname.

When the census was taken in December of 1870, we find him listed as Abner Curran, now 22 years of age, living in Manhattan at the home of his mother Emily J. Lowery and step-father William Benjamin Lowery.3 Abner's occupation, if any, was not recorded. In addition to Abner B. Curran, the extended family consisted of the Lowery family, the Linen household, Emily's mother Elizabeth Martin, and two boarders, including Edwina Cornelia Lowery's future husband, Hermann Otto.

There is no evidence that Abner Curran married or had any children.

Abner died several days short of his 26th birthday, on October 3, 1874.4 He is interred in the Lowery family plot at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. From the certificate of death we know that he was single, had worked as a clerk and was residing at 280 West 25th Street in Manhattan when he died from phthisis pulmonalis (pulmonary tuberculosis) contracted ten years earlier.5

Note: the family surname is incorrectly written as "Lourie" in this census, thus making it somewhat difficult to find in the census indices. The Yorkville area of the residence is based on the "Yorkville" notation in the section on the census page that says "Post Office."
