Loretta F. Delaney

Loretta Delaney was born at 7:00 a.m. on 21 May 1891 in Brooklyn, New York. Her birth certificate indicates that she was the sixth child born to Margaret (Montgomery) and John Francis Delaney. Her birth took place at the family residence, the Central Hotel in East New York, where her father was hotel proprietor. Mary A. Goodwin, a midwife, was the medical attendant during the birth.

From a listing in the 1921 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Almanac, we know that Loretta was serving as Secretary for the Women's Athletic Club, located at 25 Clinton Street in Brooklyn.1 She was still living at 129 Berkeley Place in Brooklyn with the Delaney family, which according to the 1920 U.S. Census consisted of her father John Francis Delaney, her brother Harold, and her sisters Florence and Maude.

About 1924, she married Horace Adams Phinney, a lawyer who worked for the Third Avenue Railway Corporation. The couple had one child, Jeanne Montgomery Phinney, who was born in about September of 1925.

According to Jane O'Connor (Margaret Jane Cahill), Loretta worked for a number of years as a salesperson at Namm's Department Store in downtown Brooklyn.2
