Bernadette Hodges - Obituary in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle - 1934
Bernadette (Delaney) Hodges - Obituary

The obituary for Bernadette (Delaney) Hodges, published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on Wednesday, October 10, 1934 and shown in the image below, indicates that she died at age 50 in Miami, Florida of complications following an operation. The item states that she had died "last Sunday," which would place the date of death on October 7, 1934. The "Miami, Fla., Oct. 10" Associated Press (AP) story provides some interesting and useful information about Bernadette, including the fact that she had been living eight months out of each year in Miami and had lived in Brooklyn, New York, for a number of years at 830 7th Avenue. Her age in this story is incorrect. Bernadette was born on August 22, 1881, in Brooklyn, New York, which would mean that she was actually 53 at the time of her death.

The story mentions that Bernadette Hodges' daughter, the former Maxine Hodges, had been married to "the late sports promoter Tex Rickard," and that Mrs. Rickard was in Chicago at the time of her mother's death. We also learn that Maxine Rickard had been living in Queens, NY, after Tex's death and that her "latest address" had been 3370 N. 165th Street in Flushing, New York.

Throughout the obituary, including the headline, Bernadette is referred to as "Bernette Hodges." This is the only reference to her as Bernette that I'm aware of, and her birth certificate indicates that her name was Bernadette Delaney. It is possible that she went by the nickname Bernette. On the other hand, there is the possibility that the name is simply a reporting error, either on the part of an informant or the wire service and newspaper reporters. My father, Franklyn Lowery Delaney, remembered her as Bernadette. 1
