Edwina Cornelia Lowery, born on September 12, 1852, in New York, NY, was the first of four children from the marriage of William Benjamin Lowery and Emily Jane (Martin) (Curran) Lowery.1
The 1860 U.S. Census shows Edwina, now age 8, living with her family in New York City, probably in the Yorkville area.2 When the census was taken in December of 1870, we find Edwina, now 18 years of age, living in Manhattan at the home of her parents.3 The extended family consisted of the Lowery family, the Linen household, a Curran child from Emily Jane's first marriage, Emily's mother Elizabeth Martin, and two boarders, including Edwina C. Lowery's future husband, Hermann Otto. Edwina Cornelia Lowery married Carl Hermann Otto in New York, New York, on July 1, 1873. The couple had no children. In June of 1880 when the U.S. Census was taken, Edwina C. (Lowery) Otto and Herman Otto (Carl Hermann Otto) were still living with Edwina's parents.4 By now, William Benjamin Lowery had purchased a brownstone house located at 409 East 120th Street in New York, and it was occupied by William B. Lowery, Emily J. Lowery (listed as "Emma J. Lowery"), Edwina Otto, and Herman Otto. Edwina died quite young at the age of 29 years, 5 months and 20 days, on March 4, 1882.5 She is interred in the Lowery family plot at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. 1 Birth recorded in the family Bible. Emily Jane Martin had been married to William Curran and had three children by that marriage.
