Carl W. Stocks & Jessica B. Lowery Marriage Certificate

Jessica Bernard Lowery and Carl Winslow Stocks eloped to Weehawken, New Jersey, in June of 1915 to get married as shown below in the image of their marriage certificate. They were married on June 20, 1915, by Pastor George C. Muller of Jersey City, NJ. The certificate indicates that Carl Stocks was a resident of New York, NY, and Jessica Lowery was a resident of Brooklyn, NY. Witnesses to the marriage were the pastor, G.C. Muller, and Douglas L. Kent. The inscription impressed into the red seal on the certificates reads as follows: 1st Deutsche Evangelische Kirche in Jersey City. It also has the year 1883 impressed below the image of a church building. Presumably, this is the church to which Pastor Muller was affiliated. Jessica's nephew, Franklyn Lowery Delaney, who knew both of the individuals, did not know why the couple decided to elope.¹ Related item: Image of certificate envelope. ¹Conversations between Franklyn L.
