"The old Wissinger Cemetery is no longer a dead subject - the Oriental Chapter Order of DeMolay, has brought new life to this small plot for the permanently retired.

The cemetery, located at the corner of Ruby Street and Oakland Avenue in Oakland, has been cleaned, trimmed and treated to a facelift.

Larry Williams was committee chairman for the civic project.  Assisting him were Mark Butler, Paul Folk, Scott Daughenbaugh, Lynn Goodwin, Pete Robinson, Ron Schmiermund and Owen Hofecker.

Along with the general mowing and clean-up procedures, the project included terracing a bank and planting vines for ground cover.  Mrs. Don Porter, member of the Wayside Garden Club, provided the vines.  Mrs. Porter sponsored this project and a similar one at Grandview Arch.

The Wissinger Cemetery entombs many tales lost except to the silent inhabitants.  The oldest grave dates to 1842, before the Civil War.

It is the family plot of Ludwig Wissinger, who settled in 1793 in what was then called the Griffith Settlement.  He came from Maryland with a grant for 300 acres received in lieu of payment for serving in Washington's army.

Wissinger's first home was located above the old Dunkard church in Walnut Grove.  The land sold for $300, very profitable at the time."
