Welcome to the WISSINGER Genealogy website. Have you been looking for your WISSINGER ancestry? Then this website might just help you out. This website was created to provide a resource for people researching the WISSINGER surname. In addition, information on related surnames are included on this website. They include: Wisinger, Wiesinger, and others.
The majority of WISSINGER's in the U.S.A. are descendents of Johann Ludwig Wissinger, who imported at Philadelphia, Pa. on September 23, 1740. He came to America unmarried, in the ship "Friendship" from Rotterdam. Johann may have lived in Philadelphia for a while and then York Co., Pa. before moving to the Middletown area of Frederick Co., Md. where he lived until his death in 1779. Johann and his wife Catharine were of the Protestant faith and in 1750, Johann and his friends built a crude log structure for their church. This building was used by the Lutheran and Reformed Congregations until 1783 when the group disbanded. In 1771, the Lutherans purchased an acre of land from Conrad Crone and in 1773, they built a sexangular log structure for their church. This building was used until 1814 at which time they built a brick structure replacing it in 1859 with a larger brick structure, which is still standing, and in use today. This building was also used by the government as a lookout and hospital during the Civil War. A few records of this family have been found at the Lutheran Congregation of Zion Church in Middletown.
In researching my WISSINGER family, I have met many cousins, almost cousins and very distant relatives who have generously shared their family history and research with me. So this website is very much a collective effort and my heartfelt thanks are extended to everyone who has participated in this effort. What started as a search for my own German WISSINGER ancestors, has resulted in a large accumulation of data about many WISSINGER ancestors and the various spellings of the surname. The earliest discovered name to date is Jsinrich de Wisengin recorded in 1135. See my history page for more information.
