Boehm Family Surname Y-DNA Project

Boehm Family Surname Y-DNA Project
A Boehm/Beam/Beahm family surname Y-DNA project was initiated in 2002 to identify branches of the Boehm family related to Jacob Boehm (ca. 1693-1781). Any male with the surname Boehm, or one of the alternate forms, who believe that they are a descendant of Jacob Boehm, or possible siblings and/or cousins of Jacob Boehm (e.g. Rudolph Boehm of Lancaster, Co., PA; Samuel Boehm of Shenandoah Co., VA) is invited to participate. A Y-DNA test is self-administered by taking a small swab on the inside of the cheek, i.e. a buccal smear. A Y-DNA test kit can be ordered from Family Tree DNA in Houston, TX:

The Family Tree DNA website includes articles on genetic genealogy, examples of some of the reports, and the costs of the tests. Any male Boehm/Beam/Beahm family member who is interested in participating in this study may request a Y-DNA sample kit at the following link:

Y-DNA Results
Descendants of three of the four surviving sons of Jacob Boehm (ca. 1693-1781) have participated in the Boehm family Y-DNA study thus far, including: Jacob, Abraham, and John. The only branch that has not been tested is that of Rev. Martin Beam/Boehm (1725-1812). All participants in this first group match on 25 of 25 Y-DNA markers or 35 of 37 Y-DNA markers.

A descendant of Rudolph Boehm ( - 1773) has been tested and his Y-DNA sample matched the first group on 24 of 25 Y-DNA markers. A descendant of Samuel Boehm (ca. 1715-1797) has also been tested and his Y-DNA sample matched the first group on 35 of 37 Y-DNA markers.

A couple of males from the Beam family of New Jersey, probably related to Jacob Beam (1728-1812) of Beamsville, Ontario, have also been tested and they are genetically unrelated to the descendants of Jacob Boehm (ca. 1693-1781).
