Much of the information about the Stutler family is taken from "Stutler-Hughes-Jackson, Pioneer Families of West Virginia" by Glady Stutler Hoffman, Atlanta, GA, 1968.
The name Stutler is a variation of the German name Stadtler. The first use of the name as "Stutler" is found in the first tax list of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1778.
Johann Adam Stadtler was born in Germany about 1712 and came through the port of Philadelphia in 1730. He and his wife, Mary Newberger, also German, settled on the south branch of the Potomac River in Virginia. They had 4 daughters and 3 sons.
Mary (Mae) Newberger (Neburgh)
The Stutler family bible states that John Adam Stutler married Mae Neburgh. They came to America in 1730 from Germany. He was the son of William Stutler of England. The Stutler's are traced back to the 1500's in Halstead, Essex, England. John Adam Stutler did not have his name changed when he entered America.
