Isn't the internet wonderful, I found a relative of a relative in this guestbook in the U.S. If there is anyone out there in this wide world of ours that wants to talk to someone who hasn't been back home to Bosiljevo since 1965, please feel free to get in touch with me. You never know I might be related to someone out there that I don't even know about. My mums maiden name was Korenic Marica, she came from Vrhova Gorica. My dad was Stjepan Fuduric from Korenic Brdo. His mums name was Kata Fuduric. It's good to find someone halfway around the world or next door to write to. Ako neko is Bosiljeva ima computer i internet javite mi se. Mi smo dosli u Australiju 1965 godine. Mi smo kumovi sa Mika Ljubic i Joza Mose, mozda neko zna te dvi familije. Mi smo doma zivili u Korenic Brdo 6, Bosiljevo (that was our address back home.

Found this site by surfing a couple of years back. Didn't sign it then. Which I am doing now. Found a Cousin (Christine Klein) in California. pent some time with her in Florida and L.A.! Cuz is cool!

She went to Croatia with me. We had a ball. Spent most time in the local pub in Bosiljevo. Drank lots of Krushkovac. We met Miro Caic. Igor used to play with me when I was a kid.

My father was born in Orisje. And I am going to Bosiljevo in May, 2004. We have to fix the roof on our house. The house is about 100 years old and has to be done.

Keep up the good work. And see ya soon! Rob

My grandfather was one of three Bennich (Benic?) brothers who emigrated from Croatia to the United States in the 19th Century and became important pioneers in the San Diego area of California State. Samuel was older by eight years than my grandfather, Marco, and Spiro was the youngest brother. The book, "Yugoslavs of the Wild West," states that Marco Bennich was 25 and Samuel Bennich was 33 in the 1880 Census. My grandfather spoke Croatian and said that he came from Dubrovnik. Your website is the first mention I've seen of a "Benic" surname. I am interested in finding out our true surname, learning where in Croatia the brothers emigrated from, and discovering any past or present relatives from Croatia, the U.S or elsewhere. I'd appreciate any information or help you might provide. Thank you.

Check out www.ellisislandrecords.org if you are looking for information when your ancestor entered the U.S. I have found several of them, but I caution you--the spelling of names and places is sometimes challenging. For instance, Bosiljevo is spelled various ways..Basijlvo, Bosilwo, etc. Some listed their residence as the actual hamlet they came from rather than Bosiljevo, so watch for that too. Country is also listed under several (given the nature of the politics at the time)origins. You will find Austria, Hungary (or both), Kroatia, and in later years, Jugoslavia. The site is very busy. I had the best luck at 3:00 a.m. (California time). Unfortunately I have been unable to pull up a ship's manifest yet, but the information I have gathered so far has been fascinating.

My ggpa Matte STOKEN left Croatia about 1888, we think. He and my ggma Frances POLICH were married in Hreljin prior to his coming to America. He worked the Butte, Montana mines for 22 1/2 years, then moved to Lincoln County, Montana. I have found the STOKAN/STOKEN name and think the Bosiljevo area may be the area he was from.

Great Site!! My grand-father, John Vidakovic, came to New Orleans from Herceg Novi circa 1840, and I'm having an impossible time getting any info beyond that. Would appreciate any info anyone might have from that region.
My wife's family name is "vukovcan" and they hailed from Bosiljevo during the late 1800's, arriving in either McKeesport, PA or Butte, Montana. Her paternal grandmother was Mary Cepuran, possibly from Bosiljevo. Thanks!

I have just stumbled onto this website. My parents come from Bosiljevo. My father Franjo from Rendulici and my mother Franca Jarnevic from Strgari. My father was proud to be a Bosiljevac and held in esteem all the other people from that part of Hrvatska. I am looking forward to make use of the genealogy resource. My paternal grandfather was Josip Rendulic and my grandmother was Anna Radinovic. My maternal grandfather was Miho Jarnevic and my grandmother was Kate Radinovic, no relation to the above. Both my grandfathers worked for a time in western Pennsylvannia. My father and his two brothers Janko and Stefan emigrated to Shumacher, Ontario ,Canada in the late twenties. My mother followed soon after and I was born shortly thereafter. I have added this website to my favourites.

My grandmother's name on her birth certificate, NewOrleans 1871, is Marie Eva Maestral. There was a "Mastral" listed in New Orleans at that time. He had supplied necessities for Maxmillian during the war with Mexico. Research shows that Maxmillian was in the Austria/Croatia area before going to Mexico. Maybe Maestral was with him and came to this country or Mexico at the same time. When searching webs all that comes up is the links to Croatia. Does anyone know if Maestral is a common name in that area? My gr-mother gave a copy of her birth certificate and two photos of her "real father" to my mother shortly before she died. That was the first anyone knew of the Maestral name. We are guessing the spelling change was just a drop of the "e". Appreciate any suggestions or information about the name!

Thanks for the update Tim. The problem we face is that most browsers are not configured with a European character set, and unable to "see" the diacritics. I could set up a character replacement table, but instead am planning to scan the pages and re-post as .jpg (picture) files. That will allow everyone to view the correct diacritics. Thanks for the input. Ray

Under the list of surnames, you have "Laslavic". That's the way it is spelled in Bosiljevo...except that there the "c" at the end has an accent which makes it pronounce with the "ch" sound. I mention this because, although my Grandfather kept the traditional spelling, my Grandfather had a Brother (who lived in Butte, Montana) who used the spelling "Laslovich" (which is, sort of, the way it is pronounced in the old country). I've located a number of other American families using the spelling "Laslovich" whose roots I've been able to trace directly to Bosiljevo. I don't know how/if you want to handle this, but you might want to add "Laslovich" (perhaps with an asterisk) to your list of Bosiljevo surnames.

I am the great-grandaughter of Petar Josip Brnja and Marija Katrina Bukovac from Bosiljevo. They immigrated to the U.S. at the turn of the century and subsequently settled first in Camas Prairie, Montana and ultimately in Anaconda. Petar changed his name to Peter Berness. While in Bosiljevo, Petar lived at House #8 Liposcak and Marija was from Skoblic Brdo. I have quite a bit of information on this family and would love to share any information with others who may be related.
