Many families were involved in the complex ancestry of the Long Family of Tulsa. This section focuses on Clarence Ray Long (1889-1935), a journalist and intellectual who lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during a period of great liberal activism. Clarence married Odie Deeta McLaughlin (1888-1976), and they raised four children in Tulsa.
This material traces the ancestry
of Clarence Long -- back to the Parkers, Vanderfords, Longs and Thompsons of western
Pennsylvania -- and of Odie Long -- back to the McLaughlins and McClurgs and Ralstons,
also of western Pennsylvania. It also includes the
descendants of Odie and Clarence Long,
down to the present day. The major families covered in this

The material includes these sections: This part focuses on the family
of Colonel William Parker (d. 1808),
who came to America from England in 1754 and fought with the
Continental Army, and on Charles Wrench Vanderford (1753-1788), a
Revolutionary soldier whose ancestors came to America from Wales and
the Netherlands. Land granted to the Parker family was known
as
“Parker’s Landing,” on the Allegheny
River north of
Pittsburgh.
The Vanderfords lived on
the eastern shore of Maryland. A daughter of the
Vanderford family, Elizabeth Vanderford (1818-1888),
married James Wilson Parker (1817-1897), and they lived in Parker's
Landing. Another child, Henry
Vanderford, was a prominent newspaper publisher and legislator in
Maryland.
SAMUEL W. LONG This
part focuses on Samuel W. Long (1833-1865), who married Almira
Parker (1840-1860) and Abbie Parker (1844-1906). Both were
daughters of James
Wilson and Elizabeth Vanderford Parker. Samuel lived
in Ohio and
died
at age 32 near Nashville, during the Civil War.
SAMUEL PARKER LONG The
first
child of Samuel W. Long was Samuel Parker Long
(1860-1926), the son of Almira Parker Long. He was a
Methodist missionary in Burma and a
minister in Pittsburgh and Duluth. In retirement, he settled
near
Naples, New York. His four sons -- Haniel Clark
Long, James
Parker Long, Donald Oldham Long and Wendell Partridge Long -- were
writers in addition to their regular professions. This
section includes information on the Illingworth family of England
and Burma and
its relationship to the Longs, as well as the Hines family of West
Virginia, which was linked a child of the Illingworth family. It also
includes a section on Oliver Moulton Chadwick, World War I fighter
pilot and brother-in-law of James Parker Long.
WILLIAM GEORGE LONG and MATTIE THOMPSON This section addresses
William George Long (1865-1926), second son of
Samuel W. Long and a child of Abbie Parker Long. He was an
oil expert who grew up in
Parker’s Landing, Pennsylvania, and worked in the oil
industry in
West Virginia, and in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the father of
Clarence Ray Long (1888-1935).
William George Long
married Mattie Thompson (1864-1915) . She
was
the first of seven children of Wesley and Elizabeth Rose Thompson, of
Washington County, Pennsylvania. Like Mattie’s
father-in-law, her father, Wesley Thompson, also died as a result of
his Civil War service.
After Mattie's death, Bill Long married
Maude Jensen Little. Her father, born in Denmark, had been a U.S.
Indian agent in Oklahoma. Her second husband, William Thomas Little,
had participated in the Oklahoma land rush of 1889 and later served as
a legislator, forestry expert and historian.
CLARENCE RAY LONG Clarence
(1889-1935) was the only child of Bill and Mattie Thompson
Long. Born at Parker’s Landing, he was a muckraking
journalist, prolific writer and
liberal intellectual. He
left behind more than 150 of his very opinionated letters, plus
numerous articles, letters to the editor, and children’s
stories. He married Odie Deeta McLaughlin and they lived in
Tulsa.
CHILDREN OF CLARENCE AND ODIE LONG This section
reports on the four children of Clarence and Odie
McLaughlin Long, all born in Tulsa, and on their
descendants.

family of Charles McLaughlin (1862-1940),
born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, also an expert in oil and gas, who
lived in West Virginia. He married Jennie McClurg (see below)
and
they
had
two children. Later he married Mary (Mayme) Eckhardt, and
they
had three children. Charles' first-born child was Odie
McLaughlin
Long. This page also contains information on the ancestors and siblings
of Mayme Eckhardt, including her grandfather, George Warner Eckhardt,
who was born in Germany about 1808 and became a tavern keeper in
Wheeling.
McCLURG FAMILY This section
reports on the family of Jennie McClurg (1862-1895), who
married Charles McLaughlin. She was the daughter of Cyrus
McClurg
(1836-1883) of Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Jennie died at
the
age of 33.
RALSTON FAMILY The family
of Martha Ann Ralston, (1838-1916), was also prominent in
Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Martha was the daughter of
William
Ralston (1796-1867). She married Cyrus McClurg and was the
mother
of Jennie McClurg McLaughlin.
MISCY/MISEY FAMILY OF MILWAUKEE This section
reports on the family of John Miscy (1888-1978), who came
to America from Zubak, Austria-Hungary, in 1915 and lived in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. He married Pauline Fojut, the daughter
of
immigrants from Prussia. They had eight children, including
two
nuns and two priests, and at home they spoke Polish. Their
fourth
child, Edward Gabriel Misey (b. 1918), married Rachel Long (1924-2004),
the daughter of Clarence Long of Tulsa. Rachel and Edward had
one
child, Johanna Misey (b. 1961), who married Neil A. Boyer.
