ETHELDRED BOYET
Etheldred BOYET was born about 1748 in Dobbs (which later became Wayne Co., NC. He was the son of Edward and Abigail BOYET. Etheldred was first recorded on the 1769 tax list of Dobbs Co., NC as a son of Edward BOYET. Etheldred married be-fore 11 Jan 1772 to Priscilla JERNIGAN, daughter of Thomas and Isabella JERNIGAN. Etheldred and Priscilla lived in Wayne Co., NC in 1790 and owned land which joined William SASSER's property on which David DAVIS lived. John PAGE, John WIGGS, and William JERNIGAN were living on the south side of the property which was located on the Little River.
Priscilla's father's estate provided them with several parcels of land in Wayne Co., NC which they sold after her mother's death. Etheldred had an entry of 200 acres on Plates Swamp in Dobbs Co., NC on 5 Nov 1771. On 11 Jan 1772 he received from Isabel JERNIGAN, full share of his father-in-law's estate. Etheldred had 200 acres surveyed on Stoney Creek on 4 Feb 1772; this land was adjacent to James PATE's line. On 30 Dec 1800 in Wayne Co., NC, he had 150 acres adjacent to his own lines, which was witnessed by Jos. B. BOYT.
In 1807 he was involved in a court case in Wayne Co., NC. In August of that year he sued Stephen SASSER and Jehu BOYT was a witness in the case. In a deposition he stated that the distance to court from his home was 34 miles and that he had attended court three times during the month of August 1807.
Apparently shortly after this, he and his family moved. On 3 Oct 1807 a certificate was written for "Ethelrd BOYET and his wife Priscilla also his daughters Betsey, Betheny, and Martha" as "acceptable members of Methodist Episcopal Church in Wayne County, Raleigh Circuit State of North Carolina." This certificate was signed by Christopher S. MORNING with the following postscript: "The Lord bless you all ways and make you a blessing where you go. C. S. M."
Etheldred was taxed in Williamson Co., TN in 1809 and 1810; but by 1812 he was taxed in Bedford Co., TN. On 23 Aug 1810 he owed 1000 weight of port to G. D. READ to be paid to Moses TURNER. In 1812 in Bedford Co., TN he purchased 340 acres of land for $1,050.00 on Jan 19th of that year. Witnesses to this transaction were John and James BOYET, probably his sons.
On 28 Dec 1819 a note was recorded which reads: "Received of Athaldratt BOYT $9.87 1/2¢ in full of his account w/ us to present date 28 December 1819 Thompson and Wardlaw by John
C. SAWYERS. On 3 Aug 1824 he purchased a negro called Jack from James BOYET in Bedford Co., TN. Another note states that he paid Thomas ROSS in full $185.
The exact date of Etheldred's death is not known, but was after 25 Sept 1828 and before the federal census was taken in 1830. He probably died in Bedford Co., TN; Priscilla died in 1836 or 1838 in Bedford Co., TN. Bedford County was divided in 1836 and Marshall County was created. Some of their children lived in both counties.
The known children of Etheldred and Priscilla BOYETT are:

THOMAS JAMES BOYETT
Thomas James BOYETT was born in either 1784 or 1783 in Wayne
Co., NC. It is believed that he is the son of Shadrack BOYET.
Thomas James was probably called James in most records. He married
17 Oct 1809 in Duplin Co., NC to Elizabeth ROGERS who was born
about 1795 in Duplin Co., NC.
He served in two Indian Wars: the Creek Indian War in 1836 in Capt. L. J. KEENE's Company, and the Natchez Expedition of 1813 in Troop number nine under Capt. Kavennaugh's Company. For this service he received two bounty land warrants for eighty acres each. At the time of receipt of these warrants he was living near Argus, in Montgomery Co., AL; this was 14 May 1855. His service record states that he served in the Creek Indian War from 30 Apr 1837 and that he had volunteered at Irvinton, Mobile Co. AL and that he served until September 1837. He was mustered out at Clayton, Barbour Co., AL.
His places of residences are many. He was in North Carolina until about 1818 or 1819. He moved to Tennessee and was in Pike Co., AL in 1828 through 1830. He moved to Barbour Co., AL and was there in 1840 through 1848. In 1855 he was living in Lowndes Co., AL, and he died in Lowndes Co., AL. One record gives his residence as Midway, Bullock Co., AL in April 1856. Pike, Barbour, and Bullock Counties are all adjacent in the southeast section of the state. Lowndes in close by with Montgomery County between it and Bullock County.
There is a record of him in the court minutes for Lowndes Co., AL in August 1866, and he died there in 1867 Elizabeth died in 1862, probably also in Lowndes CO., AL.
James and Elizabeth were the parents of 12 children. A little discrepancy exists about the names of a couple of these children, but through the Court and marriage records for the places in which they resided, it seems that these children are as follows:
1.Joseph BOYETT b. 1810 in North Carolina. He married Nancy _____ |
2.Susan/Louisa BOYETT b. 1812 in North Carolina. She married to |
S.J. WATSON and lived in Florida. |
3.Jesse BOYETT who was born 20 Mar 1813 in North Carolina. He married Lucretia and lived in Arkansas. |
4.Eli Gipson BOYETT who was born 25 Mar 1815 in North Carolina. He married 12 Nov 1833/6 to Elizabeth COOK BATEMAN, a widow. They lived in Alabama, where he died in 1893. |

1844 to Letha A. BUFFINGTON.
8.Sallie BOYETT born about 1822; she married Mr. EADY and lived in Ouachita Co., AR. |

11.James or Jones L. BOYETT b. 1828 in Pike Co.: AL. He married on 18 June 1848 to Rebecca UPSHAW. She was born in 1833 in GA. |
12.Thomas James BOYETT, Jr. was born in 1831 in Pike Co., AL. He married Mary JOHNSON on 11 Sept 1851 in Lowndes Co., AL. He died in 1894 in Hope, AR. |
Eli Gipson (child number four) married second on 12 Nov 1836 to Elizabeth BATEMAN in Henry Co., AL. Catherine (child number six) married Second to a Mr. McMURRAY of Arkansas.
Several of the children were recorded in estate records which are on file in Crenshaw Co., AL; these records are dated 1870. This record showed that Susan/Louisa lived in Florida; Nancy was living in Alabama, and Sallie was living in Arkansas.
The record in the minute book for the court records of Lowndes Co., AL (book 16, pages 150-155) show the following:
Matilda lived in Autauga Co., AL in 1867; the children of Nancy were Betty who lived in Barbour County and Lucy who was residing in Barbour County. The children of Catherine were Jefferson and Louisa and Lucretia. Jefferson was of Lowndes County and Louisa and Lucretia were living in Texas. The children of Sallie were:
William Marshall, Andrew Washington, Eveline, and Clementine. Eli Gipson was living in Butler Co., AL, Joseph in Lowndes Co., AL.
Thomas James BOYETT, Jr. was born in 1830 or 1831 in Pike
Co., AL He married in 1851 to Mary JOHNSON who was born in 1833
in Alabama. He died in 1894 in Hope, AR, and she died in 1886.
Mary was the daughter of William and Frances (CARROLL) JOHNSON. |
Thomas James BOYETT, Jr. married second about 1888 to Docia |
(GILES) HINTON, according to the history published by Goodspeed concerning Hempstead Co., AR (pages 394,395).
The children of Thomas James and Mary (JOHNSON) BOYETT are:
Ruffin Abraham, Martha L., Fannie L., Thomas J., Sallie 0., Callie, and Collie. The child of Thomas James and his second wife Docia (GILES) HINTON was Fair who was born about 189 in Hope, AR. Three children were reported to have died young.
James L. BOYETT married 18 June 1848 in Barbour Co., AL to Rebecca UPSHAW. She was born in 1833 in Georgia. They had at least four children: William C., and three females - A. E., Evelyn, and A. C. This family lived in Ashland Co., AR in 1850 and were in Lowdnes Co., AL in 1860.
Another family which is associated with the family of Thomas James BOYETT, Sr. is that of Matilda (CLEMENTS) BOYETT who married a BOYETT who was of SpringHill township in Hempstead Co., AR. He died before 1880, leaving her a widow with two young sons. These boys were William A. BOYETT b. 1875 in AR and Wilson A. BOYETT born in 1876 in Hempstead Co., AR.

According to the authors, The index contains most of the names of the soldiers from Alabama. These entries give the name of the soldier, his rank, and unit in which he served.
The correct name of the soldier may not appear for several reasons. First, he may not have served in the Alabama Units. Secondly, he may have served under a different name and thirdly, the record may have been lost.
The names have been transcribed from the National Archives microfilmed copies. Several of the Soldiers have been listed under several different spellings where there was any doubt in the trans-cription."
