GEORGE BOYETTE OF JOHNSTON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
An article in The Smithfield newspaper (Harvest Edition 1980) by Vince Wheeler concerned the historical slave house which had belonged to the GEORGE BOYETTE family. The following three paragraphs are direct quotes from Wheeler's article:
"Plans are being made to restore a slave house in Johnston County's Glendale community which dates back before the mid-1800s and contains a rare chimney made of mud and wooden sticks.
"The slave house was constructed between 1800 and 1852 . . . by George BOYETT (later BOYETTE) or his son, Larkin G. BOYETT. The BOYETT family had a 400-acre farm with eight slaves in 1850, records reveal. (Ed. note: probably the 1850 U.S. census and slave schedule)
"About 15 years ago) a man who said his mother attended school in the small building offered to buy it from the previous owners, said the current owners, Donell and Glenn STANCIL. The STANCILL brothers purchased the slave house and the BOYETTE family home about two years ago. (The brothers are the great-grandsons of Larkin BOYETT.)
Mrs. Grethel BOYETTE also began researching family history concerning the slave house and the homeplace."
The historical land marks for Johnston County, N.C. has the following additional information: BOYETTE Slave House - Kenly, N.C. A unique mud and stick chimney make this historical landmark one that everyone must see. Its a one-room log house of hand-hewn plans held together by full dove-tail notches and pegs. The unusual mud and stick chimney is the only one known to be still intact in North Carolina. The slave house sits on land purchased by George BOYETTE from the State of North Carolina as a land grant in 1797 at a price of 50 shillings per 100 acres. . . . ..
From the National Register of Historic Places: Inventory--Nomination Form is the following: "In 1800 the State of North Carolina granted to George BOYETT (1770-1852) 400 acres of land in Johnston County. On this tract BOYETT (later spelled BOYETTE) built a farm on which he lived until his death in 1852. Sometime between 1800 and 1852 he or his son, Larkin G. BOYETT built the structure now known locally as the Boyette Slave House. . . Of his total holdings, George BOYETT only farmed 100 acres on which, according to the 1850 agricultural Census, his chief crops were corn and sweet potatoes . . . The value of his farm in 1850 was $600. In the last year of his life BOYETT, who became blind, and his wife Tamsy and Larkin BOYETT (1820-1901) jointly owned eight slaves in 1850. In his will probated in 1852) George BOYETT declared:
I lend unto my beloved wife Tamsy BOYETT the land and
plantation whereon 1 now live containing 350 acres including
my houses and plantation during her natural life or widowhood and at her death or marriage to belong to my son Larkin BOYETT to him and his heirs forever.
Tamsy BOYETT, who was 73 in the 1850 census must have died before

1860 because she is not listed in the household of Larkin BOYETT in the census of that year. With her death the BOYETT property passed to Larkin BOYETT in keeping with the terms of George BOYETT's will. Sometime between 1850 and 1858 Larkin BOYETT married Chloe BAGLEY and they subsequently had eleven children. In 1860 Larkin and Chloe BOYETTE owned four slaves.
Larkin BOYETT continued to farm. During the Civil War he served as a private in the Sixth Cavalry, 65th State Troops, from 1863 to September 1864. After the war he resumed farming but the value of his real estate had fallen from $1,200 in 1860 to $800 in 1870 and the value of his personal estate from $5,935 to $500 in the same period. (Ed note: no doubt due to the loss of his slaves as personal property.) The 1880 census indicates that he owned 586 acres of woodland and forest and 75 acres of tilled land in Johnston County. The value of his farm had risen to $1,500.. . .
Larkin BOYETT died in 1901 and in that year his property including the slave house passed to one of his ten heirs, Stephen A. BOYETTE (1880-1958) . .. Stephen . . . sold his property but retained the '15 acre lot described as the homstead tract.' In 1937 . . . sold the rest of the original property to BOYETTE's wife Sallie Ann LAMM BOYETTE (1881-1943). In 1959 W. E. BOYETTE and S. A. BOYETTE, Jr. (heirs of Stephen A. and Sallie A. BOYETTE) sold 150 acres originally known as the S. A. BOYETTE homeplace' to W. Odell BOYETTE..........

GEORGE BOYETT'S FAMILY
George BOYETT, planter was born about 1770 in or near Johnston Co., NC. He probably is the brother of Joseph BOYET whose will was probated in Johnston County in Nov. court 1841.). He married Tamsey ONEAL in Johnston Co., NC. Tamsey was the daughter of Patrick O'NEAL and Mary RODGERS or ROGERS (a Revolutionary War soldier). George served in the War of 1812 and applied for a pension from the federal government. (This record provided the above information.) In 1805 and 1810 he was appointed overseer of the road in Nathan STANSIL's place (court records). In 1799 George was taxed as Jeorge BOYETT in Capt. Jonathan STANSELL's Co. with 300 acres and 1 free pole, no black pole or stud horses. (Tax records).
His will was dated 10 Aug 1844 and was probated in Johnston Co., during August term of court, 1852. (Will Book I, pg. 659 Johnston Co., NC.) Their children:
1. Penelope BOYETT who married Mr. HICKS and had children; she died prior to 10 Aug 1844.
2. Cally BOYETT who married Mr. JONES
3. Larry BOYETT who married Piety WILLIAMSON 12 Feb 1839 in Nash Co., NC (Nash Co., Marr bonds, pg. 20)
4. James BOYETT b. 1806 and married Sidney WILLIAMSON 1 Mar 1832.
5. Garry BOYETT b. 1816 married Temperance BOYKIN 9 Mar 1835 Nash Co., NC (Nash Co., Marr bonds, pg. 20)
6. Martha BOYETT
7 Larkin C. BOYETT b. 1820; married Chloe BAGLEY; d. 1901.

DUPLIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Census records for Duplin County North Carolina include the State Censuses taken between 1784 and 1787. At that time there were two BOYET family groups within Duplin County. In Captain Hubbards Company in April 1786 were Elizabeth BOYET and two other females, no males within the household. Nearby was Jones BOYET with one son under the age of 16 and three females, one of which was probably his wife. Also recorded within this group was Absolom BOYED. He could be a BOYET, but does not show up in later censuses for this county.
In Captain Ward's District also taken April 1786, were the following family heads of households: Arthur, Samuel, and Ephraim. These four men are probably brothers, and they remain in Duplin County for over a decade or more
It is possible that Elizabeth could be the mother of all these BOYET men. If so, later census records show that they would be as follows:
1 William BOYT born about 1745 3. Samuel BOYT born about 1760
2. Ephraim BOYT born about 1758 5. Jemima BOYET born about 1767
4. Arthur BOYT born about 1762 6. Female
Early Land records for Duplin County, N.C. show a Moses BOYET, planter, residing therein as early as 1758; his property was along the Ash Branch. The land had previously been owned by Jesse JERNIGAN and George CALSON, but was sold by the Sheriff, Felix KENAN, of Duplin County, N.C. for debts which were unpaid. Moses made other land transactions, some of which are now recorded in Sampson County, N.C. In Sampson County, N.C., Book 3 page 341 is a deed from Felix Kenan, Sheriff to Moses BOYET, planter of Duplin County., N.C. for 100 acres. This was recorded and proven in April Court 1772.
It can be assumed then that Moses' is the parent of the above named children, and that Moses died before April 1786 when the North Carolina State Census was taken.
Two marriage records were recorded: Jonas or Jones BOYAT married
Elizabeth PRESCOTT on 22 February 1775; Arthur BOYET married Martha
BEST on 26 July 1783. The Jemima BOYET who married Nathan HAMILTON
on 16 July 1787 was probably one of the daughters of Moses or Elizabeth.
Through the early deeds recorded in Sampson County, N.C., we find references to several of these BOYET men: Moses, Samuel, Ephraim, William, and an Absolem, all recorded as "of Duplin County., N.C.". These deeds are dated £rom 1758 through 1780, at which time these family names drop from the records of Sampson County, and the only BOYET name remaining is John BOYET and his son Nathan BOYET.
Since Sampson County was created from Duplin County it would seem that these records were made in order to establish land title, for in all these early records the land is clearly stated as being and lying in Duplin County.

DUPLIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
(continued)
Eprhaim BOYT who is first recorded in Duplin County, NC in the State Census records for 1784 to 1787, shows that he was probably married prior to 1780 for he is shown in the census records with three children before 1787. These children are recorded as two sons under 16 years of age, and two females living within the household. Assuming that one of these females is his wife, then the other would be a young daughter.
In 1790 Ephraim is shown with three sons under 16 years and three females, two being daughters probably. In 1800 he is recorded with two sons between ages of 16 and 26, one son between 10 and 16, and two sons under 10 years of age. His wife is recorded as between 16 and 45, as is he, and only one female is shown living with them in 1800, she is recorded as between 10 and 16 years of age.
In 1810 Ephraim is not shown in Duplin County., N.C., but an Ephraim BOYET is shown in 1810 in Onslow County., N.C. This Ephraim is shown as between the ages of 26 and 45, as is his wife. Only one child is shown residing with them at this time, a son aged between 10 and 16 years. It is assumed that the William B0YET, age-between 26 and 45, who is living near Ephraim, is a son of Ephraim's.
Marriage Records show that an Ephraim BOYET married a Milberry MATTHEWS in Duplin County., N.C., on 21 April 1806, but unless this is a second wife, the marriage date is too late to be Ephraims first marriage. It could be a son or a nephew also.
Land Records in Onslow County, N.C., show that Ephraim BOYTE purchased 224 acres and another parcel of 100 acres on 6 August 1810 (Deed Book 6, page 52). The witness to this transaction was William BOYT, probably his son. Later deed records show that his youngest son, Jesse, was given land on Blue Creek, 124 acres in February 1819, and later deeds yet, show that Jesse sold this land this time shown as 224 acres on Blue Creek on 28 January 1823, and was living in All Saints Parish, South Carolina, and on this date he purchased 100 acres formerly called Brinson Land. (Deed Book 16, page 93)
On 2 February, 1820, Jesse BOYET married Hester WILDER in Onslow County N.C. In the 1830 Federal Census of Onslow County, N.C., both William and Jesse are shown with families. In the 1840 census of same, only William is shown, so either Jesse moved elsewhere or has died before 1840. In 1850, a young William, aged 35 is shown in Onslow County, N.C. but he is only 35 years old, being born about 1815. So he must be the son of the other William BOYET, son of Ephraim. Also living with the young William, is Elizabeth BOYET, age 60 (b. 1790) who is probably William's mother, and the wife of the William BOYET, son of Ephraim.
Arthur BOYT seems to be the same Arthur BOYT who married Martha BEST on 16 July 1783 in Duplin County, N.C. This is just about perfect for them to have three children in 1790. In 1800 Arthur and Martha are listed as residing in Duplin County, N.C. His age is given as between
6
DUPLIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
(continued)
26 and 45 years, as is hers. There are no males beside Arthur, indicating that the son listed with them in 1790 has left home or died. If the son were the oldest of their children he Could not be much older than 16 years in 1800, so it is this author's opinion that he has died at a young age. There is shown, one daughter between the ages of 10 and 16 and two daughters under 10 years of age. If one of these younger daughters is almost 10, it could be the same as recorded in 1790 and 1800 also.
In 1810 Arthur is not shown in Duplin County N.C., indicating that he has moved elsewhere, for his wife is not shown either. Later census records for Duplin County, N.C., (1820 through 1850) shown neither Arthur or Martha.
In checking every other county in North Carolin in 1810, no Arthur BOYT was shown, so it can be assumed at this point that Arthur left the state prior to 1810.
In 1830 Arthur BOYETTE is shown in the Covington County, Alabama census, but he is much too young. Arthur from Duplin County, N.C., who married Martha BEST would have had to be born about 1762 to have married in 1783, therefore he was in his late 60's in 1830. The Arthur found in Covington County, AL, is only 40 to 50 years old.
No other record has been found of Arthur born about 1762 of Duplin County, North Carolina.
William had at least three sons and four daughters, but the only one who has been named as his son is the Daniel who was born about 1780. Probably William, Jr. was another son of William. Sons of Jones may include James of Duplin County. James disappears from the census records after the 1820 enumeration. Jesse also may be another son of Jones, for they lived adjacent to one another when the census was recorded in 1810.
Anyway, back to William. The 1800 census of Duplin County shows that William was born before 1755 as was his wife, and in 1800 they had five children living with them: two daughters born between 1774 and 1784; two sons born between 1784 and 1790; and one son born between 1790 and 1800. Daniel (born 1780) may have already married and / or left home by 1800. The census shows Daniel in a separate residence with a woman age 26-45 which could be his wife.. But no children. This is all the information that can be gained from the 1800 census. In 1810 Daniel is not listed. William is listed a Wll over 45 years (as is his wife) with only two children still living at home: a son between 10 and 16 and a daughter between 16 and 26.
Other county records provide information that Samuels family (wife
Feriby), Arthur, and Ephraim left Duplin County around 1810. That
indicates that the (younger) families listed in the 1810 census for
Duplin Co.,N.C. must be descended from either Jones or William.
