Ken Thomas on Genealogy:
A Collection of the First Two Years of a Genealogical Column From the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION

by Kenneth H. Thomas Jr. 1981

Family records of Janet Boyett, 4338 Harris Trail NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 show that Seth BOYETT was born about 1800 in Georgia; he married in 1817 Anna FRASER in Screven County and in 1850 was living in Bulloch County.

Obviously, this is Seth BOYETT, one of the younger sons of James and Sabra/Sabrey (SASSER) BOYET.  Seth was a minor in 1811, and his mother was appointed his guardian after his father's death. According to an article published in The Georgian: Genealogies of Pioneer  Settlers  by  Jeannette  Holland  Austin  (Baltimore:
Genealogical  Publishing Co.,  1984),  pp.  41-42,  Seth BOYETT married (1) Hannah FRASER on 19 October 1817 and married (2) Patience MOORE on 18 June 1829 in Screven Co., GA.

In 1807, James BOYT of Burke County, drew land in the second or 1807 Land Lottery of Georgia.  His draw was in Gordons Military District, lot 259, District 25 in County "W”.  He apparently died between this time  and July  1812  when Sabra was  appointed administrix of James' estate.   Sabra BOYET is shown among the 1820 list of winners in the Land Lottery of Georgia for that year.  She lived in Screven County and drew land in Early County. Seth was living in Screven County in 1821 when he was one of the winners of that year's Lottery.  Seth drew two winner lots, one is Monroe County and one in Dooly County.  {See Newsletter Volume II, No. 4, Volume III, No. 4, and Volume IV, No. 2.)

Two  gueries  published  in Volume  15  (1975)  of  the Georgia Genealogical  Magazine  provides  the  following  additional information about this family:

15

James BOYET's will was dated 1811 and probated 1812 in Screven County, Georgia ("P 45. p 16 Screven County Court of Ordinary" 18 Feb 1812).  Sabrey was administrix.  Seth's brothers Philip and Irwin provided security for Sabrey's bond of guardianship for Seth, a minor.   Stephen BOYET, James BOYET, Abigal CRADDOCK, Edward BOYET, Joseph DICKEY, Allen BOYD,  Seth BOYD,  Irvin BOYD petitioned that John BRACK,  Benjamin  PHILLIPS,  Hardy  SACARBOROUGH,  James BLACKMON,  and Samuel BECTON be appointed to divide the deceased property amongst his legal heirs (Folio 168, 13 Jan 1812).   Names spelled BOYET, BOYT, and BOYD throughout records.  Many members of this family were enumerated in the 1820 U.S. Census of Screven Co., GA.

Isaac BOYETT: The surname for Isaac and others is found in York, Lexington Co., SC and Abbeville Co., Pendleton Dist., SC before 1790 and through 1850 as BOYD.  Edward, James, Thomas, Seth, Stephen, Philip, and Erwin BOYD (BOYET) are among the other names of men belonging to this family. Later the 1820 and 1830 U.S. Censuses of Georgia show that the surname was BOYT or BOYET.  Some of these men received land grants in Screven and Burke counties, Georgia.

In 1840 Patrick and Elizabeth BOYT were residing in Calhoun County, Mississippi.  Patrick was living in Tennessee in 1829, but was in Edgecombe County, North Carolina a year later.  A marriage record dated 27 May 1828 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina shows that Elizabeth BENSON married Patrick BOYT "late of  Tennessee."    Elizabeth's  parents were Jacob  and Judah (WOODARD) BENSON.  This Patrick is the son of Thomas BOYET whose will was probated in Wayne County, North Carolina in February 1817.
Is this the same Patrick F. or 0. who was born 1807 in North Carolina and was in Panola Co., MS.   Is this the same as the Patrick who married a black woman, Martha (b. 1840 in Virginia) about 1865 and was living in Lafayette Co., MS in 1840, in Panola Co., MS in 1850, and in Calhoun Co., MS in 1880?

No:pg
1:10, line 21, should read "Delilah" instead of "Deliah."

The oldest settlement of Presbyterians in Duplin County, North Carolina was made about 1736 or 1737.  "One Henry McCulloch induced a colony of presbyterians from the province of Ulster, in Ireland, to settle in Duplin County, North Carolina on lands he had obtained from his majesty, George II."   McCulloch was a London merchant and was granted 72,000 acres which was located between the northeast branch of the Cape Fear River and the Black River.

LAND LOTTERY LIST, 1819

    NAMES    DRAWS
BOYETT, Isaac    2
BOYETT, Arthur    2
BOYETT, Josiah    1
BOYETT, Thomas    2

Captain Jones' District
BOYETT, Lock    2

The above are those who were entitled to draw in the land lottery of Georgia and the "number of. draws thereto of the Eighty-first battalion of Georgia Militia . . . 8 March 1819."

*Laurens County, Georgia was in the section lying between the Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers and the area was included in the patent granting a charter to the Trustees of Georgia in 1732.

"In 1805, 1807, 1820, 1821, 1827, and twice in 1832, the state of Georgia gave away, in land lots, former Indian lands by means of state  lotteries.  Individuals  and  also  families  of  orphans registered for draws  (chances)  in their respective counties. Winning,  or fortunate,  draws were made at random by state officials until all the lots were given away.  Unlike modern state lotteries, Georgia's land lotteries had nothing to do with raising money for the state or gambling, but only with disposing of newly-acquired state lands."1
Requirements for the 1820 lottery were that no previous winner could participate, except indigent or invalid Rev. War veterans had one draw and a family of more than one orphan. Drawers had to be Georgia residents for three years prior to 1818, U.S. citizen, or veteran of late Indian War who lived in Georgia after war.

RULES PERTAINING TO 1820 GEORGIA LAND LOTTERY

1.    Every white male, 18 years old or older, was entitled to one draw.
2.    Every male, “of like description," with wife and/or legitimate male child or children under the age of 18 years  or unmarried  female  child  or children was entitled to two draws.
3.    Every widow was entitled to one draw.
4.    Every family of orphans, under the age of 21 years,"except such as may be entitled in their own right to draw" whose father was dead, was entitled to one draw.
5.    Every family of three or more orphans, with neither parent living, was entitled to two draws. They were to apply for their draws in the county and district where the eldest orphan or the eldest orphan's guardian lived.
6.    Every family of one or two orphans, with neither parent living, was entitled to only one draw, to be applied for in the county or district where the oldest orphan or oldest orphan's guardian lived.
7.    Every family of more than one orphan that had won a lot in a previous land lottery was entitled to one draw.
8.    Every Revolutionary War veteran, invalid or indigent, who had served in the forces of the United States and had won a lot in a previous land lottery was entitled to one draw.
9.    Participants (except 7 and 8 above)  in the 1820 Land Lottery who qualified for draws above could also qualify for additional draws under one of the following categories:

i.    Every officer or soldier of the American Revolution who served in the forces of the United States and was invalid or indigent was entitled to two extra draws.
ii.    Every widow or family of orphans whose husband or father was killed "in the late wars" with Great Britain or the Indians was entitled to one extra draw above what they would normally receive as widows or orphans."2

This list of rules provides an understanding of the number of draws allotted to the previously described residents of Laurens county, Georgia.   Josiah BOYETT was an unmarried white male, eighteen years of age or older when the list was enumerated in 1819.   Isaac, Arthur, and Thomas BOYETT were probably married men at the time.

Need to know if Irvin (Ervin) Boyet whose estate was probated in Screven
County Georgia in 1824 had children and if so, their names and dates of
birth.  Irvin was a son of James Boyet, Screven County Georgia.  Was this
Irvin Boyett the same one who married Julianna(Julia Ann) Mundy (Munday) in
Monroe County Georgia on February 2, 1923, recorded in Jasper County Georgia book in April 1823???  Index to Marriage book 1821-1835-1841, Jasper County Georgia page 42 lists this marriage.  Also, is Irvin (Ervin) possibly the same as E. W. Boyett who wittnessed Bill of Sale between William W. Boyett and George Morris, both of Henry County Georgia, 14 July 1828, reference “Some Georgia Records, V 3 by Silas Emmett Lucas Jr.   Possibly E. W. Boyett was Edward, Irvin and Edward bing sons of James.  I am attempting to determine of either Irvin, E. W., William W. or some other Boyet who was in Jasper, Monroe, Henry, Butts or nearby County during the 1820s or 1830s was father of Reuben Boyett (Orphan on 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery while he resided in Henry County Georgia) or the Reuben Boyett listed in Georgia Genealogical Magazine Number 97, 1985 “Butts County County taxables, 1828" as John Hutto Jr.For Reuben Boyat(Boyett) who Married Louisa Amanda Heard (Dau. Of John Jasper Heard and Amanda Malvina Munday) 18 November 1849 in Troup County Georgia.  This Reuben Boyat/Boyett and Louisa Amanda lived in

Chambers County Alabama as did John Jasper Heard and family in accordance with 1850 U. S. Census.  Tlhis Reuben was killed in Chambers County Alabame in October 1858 at about the age 35 in a cotton press accident/explosion.  This Reuben Boyett was my Great Great Grandfather.
