SHADRACK, JR., AND BURRELL BOYET
from records of Frances Parkinson
(additional remarks by the editor)
In the book From Boyt to Boyette: The Descendants of Thomas Boyet
(Anaheim, CA: 1982, pp. 24, 34-36) are listed Shadrack Jr. and
Burrell BOYET, sons of Shadrack Sr. and grandsons of Thomas Jr.
According to family and census records Shadrack was born in either
1799, 1790,or Nov. 1780. He was called Shady. Shadrack and Burrell
left North Carolina between 1815 and 1820. Burrell was born about
1793 in Wayne Co., NC. Burrell was named as one of the executors of
his father's will, which named nine children, including Shadrack, Jr.
and Burrell. Land records in Wayne Co., NC indicate that Burrell
(Burwell) was a resident there in 1817 when he sold two tracts of land
to Cullen BLACKMAN (Book 10, page 491).
A marriage record for Marion County, Ms shows that Shadrack married
Sara WALLACE on 15 August 1821 in Marion County. The bondsman was
Frederick BIGNER (Book A 1812-1660, #212). Family traditions indicate
that Sarah's maiden name was SMITH, and that she had previously
married a BURNS/BYRNE and a WALLACE; she had a son by each of these
former marriages. It is presumed that Sarah was a widow at the time
of her marriage to Shadrack in 1821.
In 1822 Shadrack and Burrell were enumerated on the Marion County, Ms
tax roll (Tax Rolls, State Auditor [1818-1825] RG-29 Official
Archives, V. 505). Since the tax rolls are not arranged
alphabetically, it is assumed by the editor that because Shadrack and
Burrell BOYT were listed adjacently, that they either lived next to
one another or together. Neither owned land or property on which they
were taxed. Both paid a poll tax of 75 cents.
About 1823 Burrell moved to Georgia, for later records show his two
sons, John and William, were born in Georgia in 1823 and 1824,
respectively. Burrell married Mary Polly. Her maiden name may be
HOOKS instead of BALLARD as thought previously. From Georgia (if in
fact they lived in Georgia - the migration pattern is extremely
unusual if they did) they moved to Covington Co., AL before 1830.
Burrell is enumerated in the federal censuses of Covington County, in
1830, 1840, and 1850.
In 1825, Shadrack was listed in the tax records of Pike County, Ms as
Shadr. BOIT" [Source Records from Pike County. Mississippi 1798-1910
by Luke Ward Conerly and E. Russ Williams, (Southern Historical Press,
1978), p. 19], page 2 in original record. Maps of Mississippi in 1820
and 1830 follow; Pike and Marion counties are located on the southern
border, just above Louisiana. Counties today are outlined in white;
county boundaries in 1820 and 1830, respectively, are shown in black.
12
Of interest is a court case filed in Lawrence County, Ms (Case No.
5093 Loren Cram estate, Edward Mitchell, administrator, Box 4
Chancery Clerk's records) "given under my hand this 6th Sept 1830
John BOYETT, J.P." It is Frances Parkinson's observation that
except for Shadrack, John BOYETT is the only other adult male with the
BOYTE/BOYET/ BOYETTE etc. surname in the Lawrence County, MS area for
whom there is a record during the appropriate time frame for him to
have been the parent of the BOYTE family there at the time of Ellis
and his siblings. John BOYETTE was listed in the 1830 U. S. Census of
Lawrence Co., MS, but was not recorded in later records. In 1840, a
John W. BOYETT is listed in the Attala Co., MS census, and in 1850
John BOYETT, born about 1796, was enumerated in the Attala County
census schedule.
In 1835, Shadrack was taxed in Pike County, Ms (Source Records from
Pike County. Mississippi 1798-1910, by Conerly and Williams, p, 25) on
page 3 as Shadrack BOYET. On 14 November 1836 Shadrack registered
land in Lincoln County, Ms: Pike Co. S 23 T 5N R 8E [Section 23,
township 5 north, range 8 east]. This land is present-day Lincoln
County, MS (Property Book of Original Entries, Lincoln Co., MS
CHancery Clerk's Record Vault).
Lawrence County, MS Case No. 5046 Elizabeth Fox estate Arthur
Fox administrator Box 2 (Chancery Clerk's records)..."this
11th day of August one thousand eight hundred and forty
two."signed, Elizabeth FOX (her mark) and witnessed by John H.
ARRINGTON, Larry BOYETTE, and George R. KIGER.
An earlier probate file (December term 1843) shows that the witnesses
to Elizabeth FOX's will were Larry BOYETTE and George R. KIGER.
Chancery Records of Lawrence County, Ms Case # 5366, Box 11:
[undated?]
This is the request by the administrator of the intestate estate of Larry BOYETTE. The administrator asked to be released from the court order of February Term 1852 since he has sold the property of the deceased as ordered.
Larry BOYT was listed in the 1850 U. S. Census of Lawrence County, MS. This record shows that he was born about 1815 in North Carolina. At this date, the relationship/connection between John and Larry BOYETT and the other BOYT/BOYTEs in Lawrence/Lincoln counties, MS is still undefined.
On 25 September 1857, Shadrack registered additional land in Pike County as Section 35 in township 6 north, range 8 east. His name is recorded as "Shadrick." This same property description is used to identity the location of his land holdings in Lawrence County,m MS on 13 November 1859; this record is identified as a land grant to "Shadrick BOYTE" in Lawrence County Section 35, Township 6, Range 8 east. This property is is present-day Lincoln County, MS.
13

One page of the 1822 Tax Rolls of Marion County, MS, showing Burrell and Shadrack Boyt as paying a poll tax of $0.75, but neither owned land or other propety for which they were taxed at that time. (Tax Rolls, State Auditor of Public Accounts (1818-1825) RG-29 Official Archives, v. 505) Located by Frances parkinson who relates that each year's tax records are filed separately in individual
14
The last two land transactions are rather confusing when taken in conjunction with the 1950 U.S. Census which clearly shows that Shadrack Shady and wife, Sarah, and son, H. were living in Lawrence County at that time. It is possible that they resided in the area of Lawrence County that was adjacent to pike County. The 1950 U.S. Census shows "Shady" as born about 1796 in North Carolina; Sarah was born about 1800 in SC and H. was born about 1829 in MS. The land records indicate that Shadrack did not move from county to county, but remained in the same general area of Lincoln County after 1925. obviously county lines changed over time, and it is also possible that during the early years, the residents were uncertain of the county boundaries.
In 1860, Shadrick and Sarah BOYETTE are recorded in the household of their son-in-law, Daniel HALL and their daughter, Elizabeth (BOYTE) HALL. Both Shadrick and Sarah are listed as seventy years old, but born about 1790.

Extension Homemaker 54 Years
MRS. ELLA BOYETTE AT 85
REMAINS A "FLOWER CHILD"
By Mary K. Cox
Associate Home Ec. Agent
During the first month of work with the Extension Homemaker Organization, I fondly remember Mrs. J. W. (Ella) Boyette of the Princeton Extension Homemaker Club because of her wonderful sense of humor, youthful laughter, and evident joy for living.
If Mrs. Boyette were a teenager1 one might describe her as a "flower child," but since she is 85 years young (even though she has the spirit of a teenager) one could say she is a lovely lady who loves flowers.
On a visit to the gardens around the Boyette pond, one sees these words as one enters the gardens: "The kiss of the sun for pardon, the son of birds for mirth, one is nearer to God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth."
We salute Mrs. Boyette for her untiring hours of service for the extension homemaker organization over the years. She has been the original designer and faithful decorator for the majority of the homemaker functions. At the extension homemaker activities one always notices that the tables are adorned with beautiful bouquets and arrangements that Mrs. Boyette has created from the unusual and beautiful flowers from her gardens. She grows flowers, shrubs, and greenery of all kinds. She is still decorating for extension homemaker activities and for her church every Sunday.
She has always been interested in the outdoors and flowers. When she was a child, her family lived next door to an aunt who raised flowers. Mrs. Boyette would borrow her aunt's flower catalog to look at while sitting with her sick mother. Mrs. Boyette was able to order a rose bush then for six cents after making a dress for someone for 25 cents. She planted the rose bush outside her mother's window so they could admire it. After Mrs. Boyette married, her time was limited because she was busy "raising crops and children." After the children were older, she was able to renew her green thumb interest.
First Camellia
The first camellia bush she bought was by accident. One spring day on her way to Goldsboro to purchase a spring hat she stopped at Goldsboro Nursery which had just received 12 camellia bushes. Naturally she had to purchase one--so there went her
spring hat. She did continue on to Goldsboro but bought a flower to put on her old hat, because she had spent her hat money." This particular camellia bush is still in her yard.
The beautiful camellia garden around the Boyette pond originated when she was serving as county extension homemaker landscape program of work chairman. As landscape chairman, she initiated a landscape project for all clubs in the county. The homemakers ordered daffodils and camellias wholesale from Florida. Mrs. Boyette made an agreement with her husband who was an avid fisherman: if he would go get the camellia bushes, she would go fishing with him in Indian River in Florida (she was not a fisherman). So, they combined the two an brought a truckload of camellias back for Johnston County extension homemakers. Even after one trip, she did not have enough camellias; so the next year she and her husband went back for more camellias to put around the pond. It is not unusual for Mrs. Boyette to bring back a new plant on any of her excursions.
1921 Charter Member
Mrs. Boyette is a charter member of the Princeton Extension Homemaker Club which was organized in 1921 by home economics agent, Miss Minnie Lee Garrison. An extension homemaker for 54 years, Mrs. Boyette has held many positions in the organization but has enjoyed the most the one of landscape chairman. The Princeton Club always looks forward to the annual spring picnic in the gardens surrounding the Boyette pond. When asked why she joined the extension homemakers, she replied, To learn to live better.
Being raised near Rains, "in the horse and buggy days," she married Jim Boyette of Wilson at age 22. After living in Wilson one year, they returned to Johnston County where they lived in an old house for three years. After Jim had sawed enough timber at his sawmill to build a house, they constructed their present beautiful white two-story home.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyette raised seven children: Mrs. Howard
(Marie) Mitchell of Route 1, Kenly; James Boyette of Smithfield;
Mrs. Norma Lee Radford of Selma; Kyle Boyette of Route 1, Kenly;
Rudolph Boyette of Garner; Mrs. V. T. (Dorothea) Craddock of Route
1, Kenly; and Miss Betsy Ann Boyette of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Boyette
is proud of her 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She attends Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church, which her grandfather, William Rains, helped build.
In addition to her flower gardens and landscaping, Mrs. Boyette collects little vases and enjoys the friendship and fellowship of others.
On any clear day you will find a lady with a warm smile, bright eyes, and gentle laughter working in the flower garden because as you know "one is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth."
