Boyett, Leslie
Family
Some of the Boyetts, years back, came from South Carolina and my granddad Barney Boyett came to Mansfield from Missouri.  You could buy land for $1.00 an acre then but granddad Boyett didn’t want to buy it because you had to pay taxes on it.  There was no need to buy it because the land was free.  All you had to do was brand the cows and let them roam the country.  Then round them up and sort them out.
 E. H. Boyett, my father, was born in Mansfield and later married a fine lady, Donna Mae Thomas of Mansfield.  My father was a farmer and stock-raiser.
He at one time went to West Texas and lived out a claim and then sold the claim.  He started to buy land at the Narcatic Farm but when he saw all white rocks and not good farming land he decided to buy land in Mansfield (33 mi. East of Mansfield)
I have a fire-poker left to me by my grandad, Barney Boyett, that was originally made by my great-great-great grandad and goes back to the Revolutionary War.
I started school in Lillian in 1909 and the school was right beside the 1st Baptist Church house.  Later in the year the school was moved to the old brick school house.
I had a good primary school teacher, Mrs. R.L. Rigby, and her husband Mr. R. L. Rigby was the school superintendent.
We all liked our school Principal, Jake Hendricks, because he was a fair man and no respector of persons.  If you needed shook, he shook you down!
The Lillian High School had a good lab, great track meets, and nice proms.
I began school with Zella Ball and we dated some and wrote poems and graduated together.  Then we went our different ways and she married a fine man and I married a wonderful lady, Hester Black Boyett.  Mrs H. Boyett’s mother and father, George and Mary Black came to New Hope in 1917.  Mrs. Boyett remembers being baptized in 1918 at New Hope Church along with eleven young men who were going off to War 1.  Bros. Arnold from Ft. Worth officiated.
Some old settlers of New Hope were the McVains and Virgil Turpins and George Grimsley.
When I started to school, Lillian was an up and coming to town. It had two? ??? hardware stores, two grocery stores, a cafe, a barber shop, livery stable, blacksmith shop and a lumber yard. About 1916 it caught on fire and the east-side of town burned up and the town never recuperated and when the depression came it was killed off
We had good time in Lillian with the many church affairs. most of the people were church-going people. The family break down dances were fun and I spent many a night square dancing, Rag dancing, waltzing, and doing the polkas. We would have a barbecue between 12:00 and 1:00 and dance again.
I did a lot of fox hunting all over the country. We ran wolves and fox just for the sport of it.
My dad and I had about 15 hounds and knew everyone in, and we knew every wooded trail from here to Hadley and to Grand Prairie.
People would call us at night and tell us "we have wolves so come and bring your ~ We could go anywhere we wanted to as long as we had those dogs we had the right of way.
I was farming during WWI and was a bit too young to go. During WWII I was a bit too old so I didn't see any military service.
I heard preacher Whitehead now of Cleburne, preach a funeral for a man who had lived for 100 years. The preacher said "He was at a loss for words.”
Well, so am I at this point. Now if I was on my tractor I would think of many more things to tell you...
I am 82 years old and those were the old days and I enjoyed all of them.
-----------------------------------------------
Some time ago I wrote about a man named G. B. Boyett, who had written a letter to the Confederate Veteran Magazine.  I asked for information about the gentleman, but received no answer to my query.  Shortly after that time, I found a notice of his death in the Wise County Messenger of 20 Jan 1905.  “Crafton: Uncle g. B. Boyett, one of the first settlers of this part of the county, died on the 6th of this month and was buried by the Masons.”  I still need information about where he was born, where he was buried, etc.  It is a thrill to me to find something about these men, most of whom have bee forgotten many years.  Every time I read the microfilms of the old newspaper, I find a few  more of the veterans, an obituary here, a story of a visit to the place of birth, or the death of a spouse.
