Editor's Note: The following article has been copied verbatim although much of the earlier detail is incorrect and undocumented. The story about two brothers arriving in the U.S. is one of the most frequently found American family traditions--not only among BOYT/BOYET/BOYETT/BOYETTE families, but in most families throughout the nation.
In addition, in this article the brothers are identified as Thomas and Eli; these names do appear in the family, but there is nothing to verify the statement that Eli came with Thomas. Thomas BOYTE/BOYT is the first of the name to be documented in Virginia records (VA Colonial Land Grant, Nansemond Co. dated 1697, and 1704 tax list). Another Thomas was the first to be recorded in North Carolina records (Johnston Co. - 1752 court record). The given name "Thomas" appears in most generations from 1697 down to the present. Eli BOYETT (b. 1809 Wayne Co., NC) was the son of Henry who was the son of Thomas BOYTE, Jr. of Wayne Co. NC whose will was probated in 1817, who was the son of Thomas BOYET whose will was probated in Wayne Co., NC in Jan 1787. Eli was not an immigrant. As far as this editor knows the given name Eli does not appear in the family prior to 1800. From 1800 and down, it is used in later generations.
Two independent onomatologists [one who studies the origin and history of names] have stated and/or published that the surname BOYETT (and all it varieties) is of Scotch-Irish origin having originally derived from the surname BOYD. This information coordinates which some of that published in this article, but disagrees with the French Huguenot claim. The surname BOYT or any of its various spellings has not been found in any of a variety of English records and sources. It does appear in some Irish records.
The stowaway story continues to appear in various articles concerning the BOYT/BOYET/BOYETT/BOYETTE family. No documentation has been found to substantiate this claim, but it is doubtful that any record exists today--if the story is true and a record was made. Whether or not the ancestor/s had the stated numbers of boys and girls is unknown. The claim that John BOYETTE. married Margaret CALHOUN, sister of the statesman, probably can be proven [or disproven if it is wrong] with a little research into the life of the statesman. The data about the author's own parentage and family probably can be verified easily.

MADDUX-BOYETTE
During the age of church reformation in France, there were many upheavels in the reign of Louis XIV. Many of the Huguenots were forced to leave and went to England or Scotland which was Protestant territory.
Many of the Huguenot families eventually reached the Carolina district, which was liberal and with no religious restrictions. Such a family was the Boyette family, reaching Carolina via North Ireland and England. Thomas and Eli Boyette possibly came over as stowaways. Four days out to sea the captain found them in the hold of the ship and put them at hard labor until they reached North Carolina.
One of them raised nine boys and one girl and the other raised nine girls and one boy. One of the sons, John Boyette, married Margaret Calhoun, sister of the statesman, John C. Calhoun. From the John Boyette family |
came more sons, one of whom was born in a little Mississippi town known as Boyette's Crossing. A son of the next generation moved to Sallis, MS where he reared 11 sons and daughters. One of these sons was L.P. Boyette who moved to Water Valley, MS and married Louella Ware.
3
L.P. and Lou Ella had two daughters, Helen Boyette Ousley, deceased, and Hazel Boyette Maddux. The family moved to Paducah, KY where Mr. Boyette later died.
Hazel graduated from Holmes College, Goodman, MS and trained as a clinical lab technician and phlebotomist at Illinois Central Hospital School of Medical Technology, Chicago. She has worked in Chicago, Paducah and Salem. She married Jesse Petway Maddux, son of Homer and Nellie Gray Maddux. They spent their married life in Salem where Jesse was vice-president of Salem Bank.
Jesse, who died Dec.13, 1986, served 39 months in the United States Infantry during World War II. He was a staff sergeant and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Awards during his service in the South Pacific.
Hazel continues to live in Salem where her mother, Lou Ella Boyette, now 105 lives with her.
The children of Jesse and Hazel are Howard Gregory and John Phillip.
Gregory received the M.D. Degree from the University of Louisville and a Specialty in Family
Practice from Spartanburg, SC. He has been associated with Family Practice Clinic in
Crittenden and Livingston Counties for nine years and is married to Sheala Karen Richards of
Dawson Springs. She is a graduate of Murray State University, has attended Catherine
Spaulding College in Louisville, and has worked as a chemist and a teacher.
Their children are Elizabeth Ann (Mar. 2, 1980) and David Gregory (Nov. 1, 1983). The family lives in Crittenden County.
Phillip is a graduate of Murray State University and is superintendent of the Crittenden-Livingston County Water District. He is married to Janet Lee Patmor, daughter of George and Marian Patmor. She is a graduate of Campbellsville college, holds a master of Education Degree from Murray State and teaches kindergarten at Salem and Hampton. They live in Salem with their children, Jonathan Patmore (June 5, 1982) and Stephen Phillip (Jan. 18, 1987).

DESCENDANTS OF BUREL/BURRELL BOYETT?
Submitted by Joyce Boyett

Pensacola, FL 32505
Introduction: It is believed that James A. BOYETT was also a son of Burel BOYETT. Descendants of James A. and Burel/Burrell in some cemeteries are buried near one another. Also, Emanuel D. Boyett's (wife: Frances Lucinda Lucy COON) sons lived near James E. BOYETT in Santa Rosa/ Okaloosa counties in Florida and are buried in the same cemetery. These are too many coincidences for them not to be related somehow. Can anyone unravel this? [Editor's Note: the data for Arthur, Bennett, and Seth BOYETT and their descendants is presented together, followed by data on James BOYETT and descendants.]
The Index to Georgia Tax Distest, 1814-1817 lists three BOYETT men in Tattnall County, all residents of Keen District in 1817. These three men are all enumerated on page 003 and are Arthur, Bennett, and Seth BOYETT.
In the series Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Volume 3, it is shown that Daniel HIGHSMITH, 1770-1 830, married Elizabeth STANCIL. Their daughter, Lucretia, was born about 1792; she married Arthur BOYT on 9 July 1812. A deed-of-gift was recorded on 12 July 1825 which shows from Daniel and Elizabeth HIGHSMITH to their son-in-law, [Arthur] BOYT, and three BOYT grandchildren: Joseph, Daniel, and Bennett. This was registered in Deed Book B, p. 284, Tattnall County, Georgia. [IF Arthur and Elizabeth used a common naming pattern in naming their sons, this would indicate that Arthur was the son of Joseph BOYETT (as their son, Daniel apparently was named for her father) and Arthur's oldest brother was Bennett BOYETT.] In 1830, Arthur BOYT was residing in Covington Co., AL.
Old Sparta and Elba Land Office Records and Military Warrants, 1822-1860, shows that Emanuel BOYETT was a resident of Covington Co, AL on 24 Nov 1836. He resided in Township 4, Range 17.

[Editor's Note: It appears that there were two families in James's household. Is is possible that the older woman may have been the mother of James or Elizabeth and the two girls who were between 20-30 and possible T. BOYETT. If the above 1830 census is for James BOYETT who m. Elizabeth ROGERS, the census shows a difference in her age as noted above. The 1830 census data provides her calculated birth as between 1780-1790; all other sources and the "family record indicate that she was born in 1795. If in fact she was born in 1795, then she was very young to have been the mother of the two girls, who were born between 1800 and 1810. Of course it is possible, and the girls both could have been born nearer 1810 than 1800, but even if both girls were born in 1809, Elizabeth was only 14 years old that year if the 1795 date is correct. In addition, if T. BOYETT was their son, that adds another child to this same dilemma. A marriage record was recorded for James and Elizabeth (ROGERS) BOYETT in Duplin Co., NC; this gives their marriage date as 17 Oct 1809; indubably too late for these three to have been her children.]
