June 14, 1929 - June 28, 1982
Norms was the daughter of Winnie (Bracewell) and
Carter Steed. She graduated from Lee Junior College at
Baytown, and, in 1954, received the Bachelor of Business
Administration Degree from the University of Texas at
Austin.
Norms worked for the Humble Oil & Refining Company (now
Exxon USA) at their Baytown Refinery, and later as an
executive secretary in the Petroleum Engineering
Department in the Houston Office. During one summer she
worked for the law firm of Bracewell and Tunks in
Houston, and she also worked in Austin for (then) Senator
Searcy Bracewell.
On December 29, 1954 Norms married John Lewis Moncure.
John is now a senior partner in the law firm of Prappas,
Moncure, Harris and Eidman.
Six children were born to Norms and John. John Carter
Moncure is in his last year of law school at the Bates
College of Law at the University of Houston. Michael
Lewis and Douglas Lee Moncure both are employed with
Strachan Shipping Company in Houston. Stuart Richard and
Mary Margaret Moncure are high school students. An infant
daughter, Jean Ann, died in 1963.
In addition to her skills as a mother and homemaker,
Norms was an expert in needlepoint, sewing, and other
artistic endeavors. She fought a long and courageous
battle with cancer--a brain tumor which affected her
speech but not her sweet disposition nor her beautiful
spirit. She was an inspiration to us in so many ways and
we will always love her.
