BRAILSFORD Pedigrees

Pedigree Transcripts and Images

Many pedigrees have been recorded and collated by historians in the past. The following is a list of Pedigrees for BRAILSFORD and derivatives. Others sometimes included a BRAILSFORD within them.

Although all of these sources are indeed valuable to the genealogist, they must be confirmed from contemporary records wherever possible.

The following Pedigrees are from:

  • The Derbyshire Pedigrees 1569 and 1611
  • Visitation of London 1664
  • Visitation of Derbyshire 1662-1664
  • Visitation of Cheshire 1580
  • Visitation of Nottinghamshire 1662-1664
  • Familiae Minorum Gentium by Joseph Hunter
  • Burke's History of the Landed Gentry or Commoners of Great Britain & Ireland (1846)

    No BRAILSFORD entries appear in:

  • Visitation of Cheshire 1613 (nor BRAYLESFORD, BREALESFORD)
  • Visitation of Cornwall 1530, 1570 & 1620
  • Visitation of Devon 1531, 1564 & 1620
  • Visitation of London 1633, 1634, 1635

There may be entries for the following, which are yet unconfirmed:

  • BRAYLESFORD Staffordshire

Familiae Minorum Gentium (FMG) was compiled by an English historian and Presbyterian minister, the Rev Joseph Hunter (1783-1861). After his death his manuscripts became the property of the British Museum. The FMG was transcribed and published in 1894-6 by the Harleian Society in four large volumes. It includes Pedigrees from Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire dating mostly from 17th to 19th centuries. The fourth volume includes an index. Although a valuable resource, errors may have arisen during the transcription of Hunter's manuscripts.

The Visitations were made by Heralds to families with the right to bear arms, between the 16th and 17th centuries in order to regulate the use of arms. Supporting Pedigrees were recorded, sometimes including ancestry of wives and distant branches of the family. These pedigrees were later published by the Harleian Society. Sometimes these Pedigrees were constructed by oral history, which can only be safely relied on for one or two generations, if that. Occasionally dates were given, which possibly reflected significant dates from documents mentioning the people concerned, but were not referenced to such documents. Often ages were given which can allow some of the pedigree to be approximately dated. In general, the shorter the pedigree, the more reliable it was likely to be. Some later pedigrees contain additions which may be even less reliable. The Visitations of Derbyshire occurred in 1569, 1611 and 1662. Visitations of Nottinghamshire and London were in 1662 and 1664.

    Burke's Landed Gentry

    Introduction

John Burke (1787-1848) was a British genealogist who in 1826 issued a work commonly referred to as Burke's Peerage. His son, Sir John Bernard Burke (1814-1892), was also a British genealogist. Bernard was the creator of several editions of the Burke's Peerage companion volume, Burke's Landed Gentry. It cannot be considered entirely factual, since much of the information was gathered by word of mouth. Oscar Wilde once said, "Burke's Peerage is the best thing the English have done in fiction." Despite it's possible inaccuracies, it is an invaluable source to genealogists, detailing hundreds of influential families and dating back to the early medieval period.

Transcriptions of the BRAILSFORD entries from the 1846 and 1866 entries are included below, with links to scans of the original document.
