Brainerd Researcher?: just starting

Comments:
I have already left one message, wanted to give a little more info. I am searching for ties to Mary Cornwall Brainard Branch from Cleveland, Ohio. I know the Brainards were large in my area, owning many acres of land just outside the city. My husbands f mily now owns the old Brainard mansion on the corner of Scranton St. and Brainard Ave., I believe many streets in this area are named after the Brainards. Anyone with information regarding this portion of the family please write. Thanks.

Comments:
My brother-in-law's last name is Condy. We found a grave site in a Hartford cemetery for Conde which was the spelling before being Americanized. My sister & I have believe that the Conde/Condy line married into the Brainerd/Brainard line sometime ago, I think in the New York area. Anyone have any info on this? Can my bro-in-law be entitled to attend the reunions??

Hi Robbin, Thanks for posting Levi's will. As you know, he's not in my line, but I always like to read old wills. If you don't mind, I noticed a couple of probable errors (ones that probably weren't in the original document). In the very last line you mis-typed "eight." And in the previous paragraph, "Excecutriss" is correctly spelled "Executrix" (I suspect you are unfamiliar with the feminine version of "Executor"). I also suspect that the blanks you had in the first two items should be filled with "executrix." It was standard practice for the executor or executrix to pay 1) the debts, and 2) grave stone. I might guess that, in the 4th item, Levi wrote "all the remai der of my estate of which I shall die seized..." I wonder if there's some way you might send me a tracing of the words in question (or a scanned image in .jpg format?). In the course of my historical studies, I've become somewhat better-than-average at reading old penmanship and legalese! Oh, and later in item 4 I bet Levi wrote "my said wife, as the executrix thereof..." As for Mr. Ludlow's first name, I might have success reading the handwriting. But it would be all right for you to put in your own reading, so long as you enclosed it in brackets, something like this: "[Zachariah?] Ludlow" In Item 8, I again suspect the phrase in question would be something like "heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns forever." This was a boilerplate phrase used to cover all contingencies: an administrator might be later appointed if the executor (o in this case, executrix) died and the will had provided for no replacement. Anyway, nice job of transcription! I have forgotten, will you be attending the Reunion in September? I'm still trying to work up a talk. Richard Brainard put the pressure on me by labeling my role as "Keynote Speaker." Oh, great... See you on the Brainerd List, if not at the Reunion, Sam

If anyone is looking for a lost family member or loved one from WWII, the AWON.org is a great place to look. My fathers brother (Wally) was killed in action in Belgium during WWII. For over fifty years, my father never knew where his brother was laid t rest. Except that Wally was buried in Belgium. I took up the task of finding the burial site. After many months of looking, internet, email, VFW, recruiters and so forth, no one could help. All I had to go on was Wallys name and that he served in the .S. Army. After contacting Awon(American WWII Orphans Network), I found the cemetary, Henri Chappel in Belgium, were my fathers brother is buried. Because of AWON, I learned the right address's to write and what to ask for. I now have (for free) a 17"X 2" lithograph of Henri Chappel, with an inset photo of the grave site. Also, I have copies of correspondace between the Army and Wally's wife. There is more information on the way to me, but it takes time and patience. Just some information you can use if you choose.

I just came back from doing research on my grandfathers line in Salt Lake City.I found that my ancestral search connected me to my ancestor Hannah Brainard in Haddam, Ct. She married David Smith Jr. He became a Deacon in the church during their marriage t gether. David Smith Jr.was also from Haddam, Ct. I was wondering if there was anyone that could connect me to Hannah Brainards family. She married David Smith Jr, Feb. 21, 1765 in East Hampton in the Haddam Neck Congregational church. These are their chil ren together. Anson, Sarah, Anna, Joseph who I desend from, Parthena, Joel and Orrin. Can you direct me to someone that can help me find Hannah Brainards family? I did pull up a Hannah Brainard born in chatham Ct. father is Obadiah Brainerd..grandfather C leb..great grandfather Daniel Brainerd. This isn't the Hannah I descend from because this one would be 9 years of age. I am sure that My Hannah Brainard is connected with this family somehow. But not the daughter of Obadiah Brainerd.

Interesting blurb about the Wadsworth version in Daniel's entry to America. Regardless, who ever reads this saga of his must empathize with young Daniel. Being uprooted (probably alone) and cast out to the still uncharted sea in a wooden sailing vessel This had to be very tramatic! Combine that with arriving to a "forest primeval" of a land (with perceptions of native/wild animal savagery), it must have been quite frightening for the young ladd. This is in sharp contrast to today's "Rug Rat" watching generation.

Since My original posting with FTM. I've added about 4000 names to my tree. I'm far more involved than I ever thought. My mother started this by longhand on a spiral bound note book. When she died in 1986 I decided to record this using modern technolog . It has caused me to view history in a new Light. It will take a bit to digest what you have. Feel free to contact on my email address at any time. I was born 1937. Thanks for the contact. I know I do not have a Robbin Brainard in my tree.

Very nice Web page!! My Brainerd line is from Betsy Brainerd (1777-1865) who ma. Capt. John Arnold. That line goes back to the Daniel Brainerd who was 2st generation on your Web page. The above John Arnold was the grandson of Samuel Arnold and Sarah Brainerd. Sarah was also a descendant of the same Daniel Brainerd. Most of my info. on early Brainerds came from L A Brainerd's volumes, of which I have copies of a few pages, unfortunately not the entire work. Can you tell me what was the source( ) of info. for your 4th and subsequent generations? Regards, Dexter
