1. Joseph1 Culton was born Abt. 1722 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1773 in unknown. He married Mary before 1743. She was born Abt. 1723 in Ireland, and died before 1770.
Notes for Joseph Culton:
Joseph Culton (b. about 1721), his younger brother Robert Culton, and possibly a sister - Mary (Margaret) Culton Walker arrived in VA about 1740-41. Joseph and Robert purchased adjoining parcels of land in Bordon's Grant, also known as the Scotch-Irish Settlement. Joseph
purchased 553 acres and Robert purchased 368 acres in 1742. Initially, Bordon's Grant was in Augusta County, but in 1778, Rockbridge County was formed - the Culton land was in the new county. Robert Culton's land was adjacent to the New Providence Church.
Both of these men had children with almost identical names, so sorting them out is very difficult. Hemp tax rolls of Augusta County in 1767 lists two James Cultons and two Robert Cultons. They are brothers and cousins.
James Culton had children named Joseph W. Culton (b about 1772), James W. Culton (b. 1778), Elizabeth Culton (Trotter), Patrick W. Culton, Mary "Polly" Culton (Porter), Nancy Culton (Walker) and possibly Priscilla Culton.
Several of these Cultons migrated to Tennessee around the turn of the century (1800). Patrick W. Culton and family lived in Blount County for the remainder of his life. James W. Culton (my ancestor) was in Blount County, migrated to McMinn County, and finally to Bradley County where he died in 1863. It is believed that Joseph W. Culton migrated to southwest Missouri (Barry/Stone County area).

Much of this information comes from other researchers and recent digging into Chalkey's Chronicles -records of the Scotch-Irish Settlement. You can find all three volumes

James Culton in SC
James Culton had a lust for travel and migrated along with at least two of his children (Joseph and Jane) to Pendleton County, SC before 1785. They were neighbors of James and William Gibson. The 1790 census of Pendleton County lists Joseph Culton as head of household with 3 males, 3 females and 2 slaves
While in SC, a daughter, Jane Culton married Randolph Gibson (brother of the two above) about 1795. The Randolph Gibson family then migrated to Warren County, KY. James Culton returned to Virginia in the late 1790s and died in Lee County, VA before 1800.

More About Joseph and Mary:
Marriage: 1743
Children of Joseph and Mary
On this 14th day of June 1834, personally appeared before me Charles Butter an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said County of Morgan (IN), Joseph Culton, a resident of the county and state aforesaid, aged sixty-eight years......
...that in the state of Virginia in Montgomery County, in the months of August or September in the year 1780, he entered the service of the United States in the revolutionary war as a private soldier, and as a substitute for his father James Culton who was drafted under the command of Captain William Montgomery
In answer to interrogations, he says.
1. he was born in Augusta County in the state of Virginia in the year 1766.
2. That his father recorded his age in the family Bible and he thinks it is now in the possession of his brother-in-law, Randolph Gibson who resides in the State of Tennessee on the Tennessee River.
3. He was living in the State of Virginia in Montgomery County when he entered the service and continued to reside for several years following the war. Thence he removed to the state of South Carolina and continued there for about the space of ten years. Thence he removed to the state of Kentucky , Garrard County, Thence to Knox County in said state (KY). Thence in the year 1811 he removed to Floyd County, Indiana. Thence in the year 1821 he removed to Morgan County, Indiana, where he now resides (1834). [ Apparently he did like to travel!!]
That portion of the document ends with: That we believe him to be 68 years of age and that he has always been reputed and believed to be a soldier of the revolution and of reputable character for truth and veracity, that we concur in that opinion.
The last portion of the document is the Application for Transfer.
On this the eleventh day of February 1846, before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace for the said county of Jasper personally appeared Joseph Culton who on his oath declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Captain Buchanan in the regiment commanded by Captain Preston. In the service of the United States, that his name was placed on the pension roll of the State of Indiana -- whence he removed in the month of June in the year 1842, the he now resides in the State of Missouri where he intends to remain and wishes his pension to be there payable in the future. The following are his reasons for removing from the State of Indiana to Missouri -- that my son James Culton, with whom I resided in the State of Indiana removed to Missouri in June 1842 and I removed with him and still continue to reside with him on account of my being aged and infirm.
