Although many of my relatives have tried to make a connection to Major George Lowrey, patron of Sequoyah and aide to Chief John Ross of the Cherokee tribe, and his brother John Lowrey, I have not been able to confirm this. My grandmother, Bertha Culton, had told me of a Henry Lowrey that was a Cherokee Chief, and was her husbands, James F. Case grandfather or great great grandfather. However, the Henry Lowrey I have been able to locate and document has no mention of being a chief.
I believe the Henry Lowry in the information below, is the father of *Isham Henry Lowry, father of George Washington Lowery. Sally could be a daughter or daughter-in-law since she is the only other adult. This surname has several different spellings. I have seen it as Lowery, Lowrey, and Lowry.
* Isham, sometimes spelled as Isom was also known as Ishner.
Note! If anyone has information to confirm this or prove differently, I would appreciate hearing from you.
1. Henry George1 Lowery was born 1780 in Tennessee, and died 1850 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Harper, October 07, 1811 in Liberty Co. Georgia, daughter of Leonard Harper and Elizabeth.

Email from Mary: ([email protected] )
With the information we both have, I think that we should begin with your Mary Ann Lowery b. 5 Sept 1868 whose father you list as George Washington Lowery who married Euphamy Johns in McMinn County, TN in 1855. My husband's father had an old Lowrey family Bible that went back several generations. Years ago I saw the entry in it for your G.W. Lowrey, and the birth date, the same one you have for him, Oct 24, 1832, was all handwritten in. He was listed as the oldest child, my husband's great grandfather, Isham Rutherford was born about 15 years later on May 13, 1851. You have G.W. listed as born in Rhea County, TN, this is where I have Isham R. listed as being born. But after reading your information I have a new question for both of us, did your G.W. and his wife Euphamy Johns Lowery move from TN to MO when his father did between 1850-1860, or did he stay in TN with his wife and move to MO later? Do you know the answer to this? I know G.W.'s father moved to White River Twp, Marion County, ARK because he is there in the 1860 ARK Census, and the names listed in the family match up. What are your thoughts on this Deanna? Next, David Lowrey who has the Lowrey/Lowery/Lowry webpage sent me information he had got that Henry was living in Gwinnett County, TN after he left home and married, 1. Margaret 2. Sarah Harper--are you familiar with this info? I have no information that Henry and his wife and family ever moved to ARK, or MO with the family, do you? Lastly, I have information that your G.W. and my husband's Isham Rutherford brother William Clayton Lowery changed the spelling of the his last name to Lowrey when he was 21 years old. You spell G.W's name Lowery, Isham Rutherford, my husband's great grandfather is always listed as Lowrey, 1. Did any of your Lowery line ever change the spelling for good to Lowrey, and if so when?
4. Isham Rutherford3 Lowery (Isham H.2, Henry George1) was born May 13, 1851. He married Millisa Roberts.

Notes for Bertha Ann Culton:
From my Mother's (Earmel Case) notes regarding her Mother's life
This is written as she took the notes when talking with her mother and I have left it much the same.
Bertha Ann Culton, MO was born in a log cabin, Aurora MO. Left and went to Jasper County. After the third grade, she had to stay home and help out. They rented and moved around a lot. Moved to Mount Grove, was all grown up so they had to clear land to grow crops. Brother Winifred came home to help farm. They traded a small farm for a larger farm, lived there several years. Went into debt for live stock, couldn't pay off and had to sell and move back to Jasper Co. She was 15 then. Built a 2 room log house by a spring. Built a box and let water run through to keep milk and butter cool. " Every time it rained, we have to get it out before it floated away. Chris took a farm across from us. Living here when married at age 19."
They raised hogs and cattle, wheat and corn. During Mad Dog Days, (?) chased mad dog all day. During night, Winifred sleep walked to field to straw stack, (let cattle run in field) a wonder he hadn't come across mad dog.
"Dad made sorghum from cane after we moved to Jasper. Had a vat 10' long to cook it in. I took the foam off the sugar."
Left there to Texas County in 2 covered wagons, came back in a wagon and covered hack.
At 7 years, went to school at Oceola. Her Grandma had knitted a scarf and mittens.
Much of this sounds disjointed and I am not sure of the sequence but the general idea seems to be they were very poor people and couldn't seem to get ahead, no matter what they tried.

Isham H. Lowrey, b. 1810 in GA (note Isham's father may have been born in TN) m. 1830 in IND Cynthia Clayton b. 1812 KY (I am not so sure that the information about them being married in IND is correct so only use it as reference material that needs further research).
1. George Washington Lowrey b. 24 Oct, 1832 in TN (I can confirm your George Washington Lowrey's date of birth because it is listed in my husband's family Bible as the first child of Isham Lowrey. But this information does not list the place of birth for G.W. Lowrey, this I got from the 1840 Rhea County, TN Census.
2. William Clayton Lowrey b. 1837 in Claiborne, TN d. 18 May 1907 Vancouver, Clark County, WASH. buried in Vancouver, WASH. m. 26 Nov 1856 Lydia Ann Bean b. Aug 1 1837 TN, d. 18 Feb 1891 WASH.

5. Joseph A. or H. Lowrey b. 1843 TN
6. Sarah C. Lowrey b. 1845 TN
7. Margaret M. Lowrey b. 1847 TN
****This is my husband's great grandfather****
8. Isham Rutherford Lowrey b. 13 May 1851 TN
m. 1. Melissa Roberts m. 2. ? Brancy
There were many children from Isham's two
marriages, my husband's
grandfather
was the oldest child from the first marriage he
was ......
1. Joseph Alexander Lowrey
b. Cedar Gap, Wright Co, MO
d. 13 Aug 1948 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish,
LA
m. Margaret Emily Bounds in Little Rock, ARK
Their son Horace Rutherford Lowrey was my husband
Mark Lowrey's father
One interesting point here, my husband's father
received a letter from
a cousin in New Mexico who mentioned William
Clayton Lowrey listed as
Isham H. and Cynthia Clayton's son above, and in
the letter it was also
mentioned that Wm. Clayton Lowrey had moved to
Washington, and that fits the
information I have found. Between this letter and
the family Bible with the name and
birth date of your George Washington Lowrey, I
believe we are definitely
talking about the same family.
9. James Addison Lowrey b. 1854 TN.
Lastly, I am trying as I mentioned in the first
email, to see about the
story that an earlier Lowrey in the line was
Indian, secondly I also am
researching a line of Lowrey's that were
originally from Scotland, then
moved to Donegal, Ireland which is in the
northern part of that country.
In the early 1720's
they came to America and settled in PA. One of
the direct descendants
of this
line was named James Lowrey and he married
Susannah Patterson in PA.
The family then moved to VA where James served in
the American
Revolutionary War.
Another researcher David Lowrey told me that this
James with his family
moved into GA and this is where Henry the
possible father of Isham H.
Lowrey was born. So the question I have was Henry
an Indian, or a
Scotch Irish son of a
Revolutionary War soldier whose name was James
Lowrey?
And additional info you can send me would be
appreciate, lets try to
sort this out together.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Mary Mix Lowrey
