Lodwick and Mary Brand/Brandt

Lodwick Brandt, Senior was born March 1, 1747 probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died about 1827/1828 in Perry County, Ohio. He was the son of Martin Brandt and Anna Margareta Kroner. Source of this information is the Brandt family Bible. There are several spellings of his name: Lodwick, Ludwig, Lewis, Ludwick and Brand/Brant/Brandt.

Ludwig's last will and testament lists much of his family: Elizabeth, daughter; Lodwick, son; Mary, Eliza, Louis, James, John, and Isaiah are Elizabeth's children; Martin & Jacob Brandt, grandsons; John Kane, son in law; David Brandt, nephew; John Hammon, trusty friend. The will was written on July 26, 1822.

Some researchers believe he married Mary Byers daughter of Castle/Casimir Byers. Ludwig's wife's name is Mary because she is named in his estate papers and also in land deeds but I don't have proof of her parents.

Ludwig and Mary Brandt had two children: Elizabeth Brandt born about 1779 according to the census records and mortality schedule and Ludwig Brandt, Jr. born about 1789. Elizabeth married Jacob Mohler, then after his death she married John Cain/Kane. Ludwig, Jr married Sally/Sarah Mohler.

The first records I have of Ludwig is in the Revolutionary War records that are held in the Pennsylvania State Archives. Ludwick Brand, Cumberland County, Allen Twp, PA was in the Cumberland County, 3rd Battalion, 4th Company, 5th Class during the years 1777 - 1780. This information was taken from the Class Returns. Ludwick was also on the Delinquent List in December 1780 in the same Battalion and Company. In the book "Index to Associators and Militia of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania: An Index to Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Volume VI" Ludwick Brand is listed in the militia of the 4th Company, 5th Class of August 1780, under Captain John Lamb. (Also listed is a John Brand.) I have found no other records of his Revolutionary War service and he did not receive a pension.

Ludwig (Lodowick) Brand was listed as taking the Oath of Allegiance on April 25th, 1778 in Cumberland County, PA. The Oath reads as follows: "I do swear, that I renounce and refuse all Allegiance to George the Third King of Great Britain, his heirs and successors; and that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Free and Independent State; and that I will not at any time do or cause to be done, any matter or thing that will be prejudicial or injurious to the freedom and Independence thereof, as declared by Congress; and also, that I will discover and make known, to some one Justice of the Peace of the said State, all Treasons or traiterous conspiracies, which I know, or hereafter shall know to be formed against this or any of the United State of America. The names of Persons who took the above Oath before John Creigh one of the Justices of the Peace for the County afforesaid................."

The various tax records of Cumberland County, PA and Fairfield and Perry County, Ohio show that Ludwig probably moved to Ohio as early as 1805 if not sooner. Following is a listing of the tax records I have found:
