Joshua Brazzle, Sr and Nancy Quillen Family
The
Family of
Joshua
Brazzle, Sr.
and Nancy
Quillen
During my years of research of the Brazzle family I have
found it a necessity to designate this Joshua with the 'Sr.' label. His son,
Joshua, will be labeled as 'Jr'. I have never seen any records with the 'Jr.
and Sr.' label, but do so here in order to identify the correct individual.
Joshua Brazzle, Sr. was born on January 11, 1805 in Ohio and
died September 13, 1858 in Harrison Co, Missouri; buried Allen Cemetery in
Eagleville, Mo. He married Nancy Quillen on May 20, 1824 in Lawrence Co,
Indiana. Various spellings of her surname have also been found: Quillin,
Quillane, etc. She was born on July 25, 1807 in Clinch River, Scott Co,
Virginia and died on July 25, 1858 in Eagleville, Harrison Co, Mo. She also
is buried in Allen Cemetery.
In his
Last Will and Testament, Joshua states
that he has "seven living children (viz) Rhoda Rily, Elizabeth
Brazzell, Unity Lemar, Samson Brazzell, Joshua Brazzell, Riley Brazzell
and John Brazzell."
Joshua also states in the Will
that three other persons are to receive one dollar--- "and I will to
William Brazzell or heirs one dollar, to Daniel Brazzell or heirs one
dollar and to Sarah Lemar or heirs one dollar after which the remainder of
the value of the appraisement is to be equally divided among my seven
living children (viz) Rhoda Rily, Elizabeth Brazzell, Unity Lemar, Samson
Brazzell, Joshua Brazzell, Riley Brazzell and John Brazzell."
William, Daniel and Sarah/Sally are the older children of Joshua and Nancy
and had already died by the time Joshua wrote his will.
Joshua purchased land from U.S.
Govt-- October 15, 1835-- Joshua Brazzell of Green Co, Indiana the SE 1/4
of SE 1/4 of S2 in T6N of R5W in Vincennes Land. 40 acres. Joshua's father
purchased land at the same time.
Another land purchase from U.S.
Govt- August 1, 1839 by Joshua Brazzell of Greene Co Indiana-- the NE 1/4
of the NE 1/4 of S11 in T6N of R5W containing 40a.
About the year, 1855, many of the
Brazzles and the related families made an exodus from Indiana and moved to
Harrison County, Missouri. Joshua and Nancy sold
their land in Greene Co. Indiana on January 23rd of 1855. On August
25, 1856 Joshua and James L. Lemar together
bought land in Harrison Co,
Missouri. I do not know who this James L. Lemar is, but he could be a
brother-in-law or son-in-law of Joshua
Grave stone of Joshua Brazzle Sr. and Nancy Quillen Brazzle at Allen

Sampson
Brazzell-- born September 20, 1833 in Greene Co, Indiana.
Elizabeth Brazzle-- born about
1836 probably in Greene Co. Indiana. Proof has not been found but it is
believed that she married a man by the name of Gilliam.
Unity Brazzle-- born about 1837
probably in Greene Co, Indiana. She married James M. Lemar on August 21,
1856 in Harrison Co. MO. (source: Marriage Book of Harrison Co) James Lamar
had married Unity's sister, Sarah Brazzell Lamar. See
Sarah's webpage for more information on them.
James Lamar probably married 2 more times after Unity died --- Roxann about
1860 and Elvira Long in 1864. Per information in the book Harrison County
Missouri Cemetery Records, James M. Lemar was born Dec 27, 1823 and died
June 8, 1910; buried in Allen Cemetery. Buried next to him is Elvira Lemar
(Jan. 25, 1833- Jan.21, 1907) and Edwin S. Lemar, son, died Oct. 9, 1895;
30years, 5 months.
Unity Brazzle and James M Lamar had one child, Unity Ann Lemar born
about 1859. She is listed in the family of James and Elvira Lemar in the
1870 census of Harrison Co Missouri with the spelling of Amity Lemar age 11.
Unity A. Lamar married John Q Fitzgeralds and she died approx Aug 6, 1895.
Unity and John are buried in Logsdon Cemetery, Harrison Co Missouri.
Joshua Brazzle
(Jr.)-- born about 1842 in Greene Co, Indiana.
Riley Brazzle-- born about 1846.
I have found little information on him but he is listed with his brother,
Sampson, in the 1870 census of Harrison Co Mo at age 24. His other brother
John Brazzle is living next door. There is a Riley Brazzill listed as a PVT
in Company A, Unit 102 of the Illinois US Infantry of North Henderson in an
online database but NARA was unable to locate any file on this Riley
Brazzill.
