Alexander Queary Query Sarah Henderson

Family of

Alexander Queary / Query

and

Sarah Henderson

Alexander Queary was born about 1832 in Canada (source: census & obituary) and died January 17, 1894 in Clyde, Cloud County, Kansas. He married Sarah A. Henderson on April 2, 1866 in Lee County, Iowa. She was born about 1850 in Maryland (source:census).

Alexander enlisted in the Infantry at Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa on Aug 13, 1862. He was in Company A, Regiment 19 and was captured at the battle of Stirling Plantation on September 29, 1863, then released and exchanged on July 22, 1864. He spent nearly a year as a prisoner of war at Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas. Information about the 19th Iowa Infantry and the Battle of Stirling Plantation is located on a webpage from Camp Ford, the prison camp in Tyler, Texas. He received a pension and subsequently Sarah received a widow's pension. His military records and their pension information is on this webpage: Query Military Papers.

After leaving the military, he returned to Lee County, Iowa and married Sarah in 1866. Approximately 1875 they moved to Orange Township, Lincoln County, Kansas and by 1880 they had moved to Clyde, Cloud County, Kansas.

Little is known about the family of Sarah. I did find her in the 1860 census of Lee Co, Iowa along with her brother William Henderson. They were living with the family of R.W. & Susan Hutchcraft so presumably their parents had died and perhaps the Hutchcrafts were relatives. In 1900, William had moved to Cloud Co. Kansas also, along with Alexander and Sarah.
