THE SCHMID FAMILY

SCHMID is my maternal grandmother's surname.  Schmid is a common family name in Germany.  My ancestors have been traced to the early 1600's in the village of Pliezhausen (located northeast of Tübingen in Württemberg on the Neckar River).

My maternal great-grandfather, John SCHMID (1854-1942), was born in, and emigrated from, Pliezhausen, to the US. He was a stone mason.  He married Josephine KAUTZMAN (1855-1947) in Great Bend, Kansas, a lady he met on the boat on the way to the US. She emigrating in 1880 from Ettlingen, Baden, Germany.  They were married in Great Bend and later settled in Wichita, Kansas (map), the same town in which my other maternal great-grandfather SCHWEITER settled.

There are over 4,000 deceased SCHMIDS listed in the US Social Security deceased data base, 54 of them from Kansas.
