SCHWEITER
is my maternal grandfather's surname. It has been traced to both
Germany and Switzerland. I am descended from the Swiss Schweiters.
The
earliest record of the Swiss Schweiters is in Buchen near Bern in the
early 1500's.
Henry
Schweiter, my
great grandfather, was born in, and emigrated from,
Männedorf, Zurich,
Switzerland to the US in 1867 and in 1870 settled in
Wichita, Kansas USA. One of the early pioneers and developers
of Wichita, Henry Schweiter is hailed in his
obituary for his vision in building an 11
story skyscraper in 1910 in downtown Wichita, helping
transform the village to a "first class city."

Henry Schweiter had 9 brothers and
sisters. One of his brothers also left Switzerland in the 1800's
and settled in
Clarkston, Washington State, USA.
Henry Schweiter (1844-1925)
and my ancestors have
been traced back to the 1500's in Switzerland. Other Schweiters are
found in Germany in the 1600's but I can not find a link between my
Swiss Schweiters and the German Schweiters.

One
of my maternal great-grandmothers was
Caroline GÄRTNER
(1854-1923). She emigrated from Stockheim, Württemberg
around 1870 and married Henry Schweiter, my great-grandfather, in Wichita
in 1873. I have not yet been able to determine Caroline
GÄRTNER's
family history and would welcome any information on the
subject. In 1999 about 30 Schweiters were listed in the US telephone
books. In 2013 over 60 Schweiters are listed in the US phone
directories (whitepages.com)

In 2010 there are
52 Schweiters listed in
the US telephone books. There are
48 listings for Schweiter
in the 2010 Swiss telephone directories. Interestingly, there
is only one Schweiter listed in the 2010 German telephone directories.
There are 16 Schweiters listed in the
US Social Security Death
Index.
