Also of MARY the beloved wife of the above at rest October 25 1883 aged 85 years. “Looking unto Jesus.” Also of the Rev. THOMAS R. FORMAN M.A. vicar of STANLEY nr. DERBY only son of the above who entered into rest Aug 13 1893 aged 40 years.

2. In loving memory of JOSEPH TOMLINSON of SWARKESTONE LOWES who died May 15 1875 aged 56 years. Also of MARY, his wife, who died Dec 20 1897 aged 65 years. “Until the day breaks.”

3. In loving memory of THOMAS CLEWS who departed this life Feb 13th 1890 aged 71 years. “Thou didst love the liberty of man.” Mon:- J. BERESFORD

14. In affectionate remembrance of THOMAS WEIGHT who died August 31 1873 aged 77 years. 18. In memory of JOHN FORMAN who died on Feb 15th 1882 aged 45 years. Also of MARY wife of the above who died Sep 15th 1881 aged 43 years. “Thy will be done”

Sacred to the memory of HENRY MEAKIN who died January 11th 1863 aged 71 years. “Reader prepare to meet thy God” Also of ELIZA SARAH MEAKIN of SPONDON wife of the above who died March 1 1875 in her 75th year. “This languishing head is at rest Its thinking and aching are o’er This quiet immovable breast is heaved by affliction no more” Mon:- BATEMAN, DERBY.

21. This stone is erected in affectionate remembrance of EDWARD the son of HENRY and ELIZABETH MEAKIN who departed this life August 28th 1836 aged 25 years. “A pale consumption gave the fatal blow The stroke was certain but the effect was slow With lingering pain death saw sore oppress’d Pitied his size and kindly gave him rest.”

22. Here lies the body of HANNAH MEAKIN wife of WILLIAM MEAKIN who died August 15th 1791 aged 51 years. Also the said Wm MEAKIN died October 31st 1807 aged 82 years.  [Note by C.D.B. Payne:  Hannah Meakin née Forman was baptised at St Mary’s Chellaston on 28 Sep 1734. Her age at the time of her death is possibly a mis-reading for “… 57 years”.]

23. Here lieth interred the body of WILLIAM MEAKIN son of WILLIAM and HANNAH MEAKIN who departed this life on the 10th day of June 1702 in the 8th year of his age. “Short was my life Long is my rest The Lord he takes Whom he loves best” Mon:- THO. BRUNT

24. Here lieth interred the body of MARY MEAKIN the daughter of HENRY and MARY MEAKIN who departed this life in her infancy on the 20th day of December in the year 1707. Mon:- T. BRUNT

25. In memory of HENRY MEAKIN who departed this life Aug 30th 1804 aged 82 years. Also of MARY his wife who departed this life May 30th 1805 aged 80 years. “Their flesh shall slumber in the ground Till the last trumpet’s joyful sound Then burst their chains with sweet surprise And in their Saviours image lie”

26. Sacred to the memory of HENRY MEAKIN who died May 23rd 1831 aged 71 years. “Long lingering on the borders of the grave From which no skill on earth had power to save In racking pains, I spent my daily breath But found no refuge, till retrieved by death” Mon:- DUNNICLIFF, MELB.

30. Sacred to the memory of JOSEPH SOAR who departed this life Sept 1st 1840 in the 88th year of his age. Also, SARAH wife of JOSEPH SOAR who died Sept 3rd 1832 in the 83rd year of her age. “Princes this clay must be your bed In spite of all your tow’rs The tall, the wise, the reverend head Must lie as low as ours” Mon:- CARTWRIGHT

31. Sacred to the memory of ELEANOR, daughter of FRANCIS and CATHERINE SEPHTON of SHARDLOW who departed this life Febry 25th 1836 aged 18 years. “Ah! solemn thought it turns my features pale A blooming female in this gloomy vale Snatched from her friends snatched from her mother dear We tender parents sacrifice a tear This most beloved ? God ordained must go Alas how transient were our joy below”

32. In affectionate remembrance of FRANCIS SEPHTON of SHARDLOW who departed this life January 11th 1857 aged 57 years. Also of CATHERINE his wife who died August 23 1884 aged 89 years.

33. Sacred to the memory of ELIZABETH wife of HENRY MEAKIN of this place. She departed this life Novbr 23rd 1839 aged 25 years. “Thus when we‘ve reared a young and tender vine And taught its docile branches where to twine An easter wind or some pernicious frost Nips the young branch, and our fond hopes are cross’d”

34. Sacred to the memory of ROBERT son of WILLIAM and SARAH FORMAN who departed this life the 30th of Augst 1827 in the 11th year of his age. “Hope looks beyond the bounds of time The youth we here deplore Shall rise in full immortal bloom and bloom to fade no more”

35. In affectionate remembrance of ROBERT THRUTCHLEY of CHELLASTON who died at SINFIN HOUSE April 10th 1869 in the 76th year of his age. Also of MILICENT relict of the above who died at SINFIN HOUSE March 17th 1873 in the 79th year of her age. “The memory of the just is blessed”

42. Sacred to the memory of SARAH ELIZABETH POXON daughter of WILLIAM and MARTHA POXON who died November 26th 1848 aged 16 days. Also WILLIAM HENRY POXON who died August 28th 1857 aged 2 months. Also HARRIET EMILY POXON who died March 13th 1859 aged 5 years. Also MARY LOUISA POXON who died March 16th 1859 aged 8 years: “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven”

43. In loving memory of ELIZABETH the beloved wife of WILLIAM HULLAND who died December 7th 1890 aged 32 years. “If thou shouldst call me to resign What most I prize it ne’er was mine I only yield Thee what is Thine Thy will be done”

50. Here lieth interr’d the body of SARAH the wife of LUKE PYM, who departed this life March ye 10th in the year of our Lord 1754 aged 33 years. “Receive me now O Lord I pray, When thou my limbs do take, And when my strength doth wear away, Do not my soul forsake.” Mon:- W.WOOTTON sculp.

51. Sacred to the memory of JONATHAN PYM, who departed this life Dec 20th 1817 aged 72 years. “A life of labour I have journey’d through And rendered unto every man his due, My sails are past my head lies quiet here, God bless my children & their off spring dear.”

52. To the memory of ALICE PYM wife of JONATHAN PYM who died Feb 28th 1786 aged 43 years. “She who lieth here was in her life, A tender mother & a loving wife, A quiet neighbour, to the poor a friend, Happy is she that such a life doth end.”

53. In memory of JOHN PYM son of JONATHAN & ALICE PYM who died April 25th 1793 in the 20th year of his age. ‘Young men prepare yourselves to die, For life is short, and death is nigh, Prepare in time make no delay, I in my prime was call’d away.”

54. In affectionate remembrance of ANN, wife of GEORGE NEWTON, who died January 5th 1865, aged 79 years.

61. Here lieth the remains of ANN FOREMAN wife of RICHARD FOREMAN she departed this life the 9th day of July 1782 aged 62 years. Here lieth the remains of RICHARD who departed this life the 7th day of August 1793 aged 65 years.

62. Here lieth interr’d the remains of MARY daughter of RICHARD & ANN FOREMAN she died the 8th day of May 1771 aged XVII. “Mourn not dear friends for my decease I trust in Christ I’ve made my peace Life is uncertain, Death is sure She gave the wound, and Christ the cure.”

63. Here lieth the body of RICHARD FORMAN who departed this life the 13th day of November 1774 aged 77. Here also lieth the body of HANNAH FORMAN his wife she died the 15th of February 1774 aged 75.

64. In affectionate remembrance of RICHARD son of HENRY & HELEN FORMAN who departed this life February l2th 1852 in the 19th year of his age. “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord From henceforth; Yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” Rev. 114. To the memory of JOHN COWLE who died Feby 3rd 1932 aged 75 years. He served in the Zulu war of 1879. With the 17th Lancers in INDIA with the Queens Bays. Also in the South African War and the Great War with the Derbyshire Yeomanry.

This stone is erected in memory of CAPTAIN WILLIAM MANFULL late of the 3rd King‘s own Light Dragoons who left his native village, CALKE in DERBYSHIRE in the year 1793 and joined the 16th Light Dragoons as a private soldier and returned as a captain from the 5th King‘s Own Light Dragoons in the year 1825. He had no friends to assist but his own perseverance and industry and strict attention in obeying the orders of his superior officers after serving in her Majesty‘s service 52 years at home and abroad. He retired from the service and settled at CHELLASTON HILL in the county in the year 1825 where he lived beloved and died lamented on the 20th June 1857 in his 84th year. “Reader, go and do likewise” Mon:- DUNICLIFF, MELBOURNE.

228. Sacred to the memory of JOHN the youngest son of THOMAS & MARY BROWN DUMELOW who died October 1st 1844 aged 28 years. “Behold thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” Psalm 39th ver 5th

229. Sacred to the memory of THOMAS DUMELOW who departed this life January 11th 1841 aged 62 years. Sacred to the memory of ANN his wife who departed this life January 27th 1851 aged 70 years. “These languishing heads are at rest Their thinking and aching are over These quiet immovable breasts Are heav’d by affliction no more These hearts are no longer the seat Of trouble and torturing pain They cease to flutter and beat They never shall flutter again”

230. Sacred to the memory of GEORGE HUGHES (late of DERBY) who departed this life the 18th of August 1826 in the 76th year of his age. Mon:- EVANS

Monumental Inscriptions in St Peter's Church
Extracted from: The History, Gazetteer, and Directory of the County of Derby, Volume II, Part I, by Stephen Glover, 1829
On the north side of the chancel, on an alabaster slab, a cross florée, with the sacramental cup on one side and the book of the holy writ on the other, with the date of 1405 engraven thereon.
In the south aisle of this church is an alabaster slab, with the effigy of an ecclesiastic in a cope, in the attitude of prayer, inscribed - Hic jacet corpora ............ Bawredon quondam capellanus hujus ecclesiae.  A. Dni. M.D.XXIII. eujus anima propitietur Deus, Amen.
In the same aisle is engraven, on a similar slab, the effigies of a man and his wife, in scroll lines.  This is for Ralph Bancroft, and Alice, his wife, without date.
Two others for the same family ; the inscriptions on them are nearly obliterated.
Humphri Bancroft died Ano Dom. 23 April, 1557 ; and Elizabeth, his wife, .................
John Bancroft died Ano Dom. 13 Sepr. 1557 ; and Margaret, his wife, ...............Another bears the date of 12 Decr. 1555.Back to the Top
