The
cover of the album (left) is in good condition with working brass
clasps and
an intact spine. The gilt surface on the
raised
initials "E.B."
has largely rubbed off, although some traces of it
still remain,
as can be seen in the enhanced image (above). The initials
must
be those
of the owner of the album, but unfortunately there is no inscription at
the front of the book which might indicate what the initials stood
for.
Loose
at the front of
the album is a plain visiting card with the
printed name, "W.P. Roberts." |

Only
two of the
photographs in the album have captions identifying the
sitters. The first of these (#36) identifies a young child
seated on a chair as "George
Byrom
Shallcross, taken Sept 28th/65 Aged one year & 9 months."

The
last photo in the
album (#37) is of a youngish woman, identified in faint pencil on the
reverse as "Mrs. Brimelow,"
as shown in the enhanced image at left. It was taken around
1870. As George Bryom Shallcross's mother was a Brimelow, it
seems likely that this woman was an aunt of GBS.
