Erasmus Foster Bostock was born about 1858 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, son of a teacher Thomas Bostock (c1829-), originally from Derby.

In 1881 (Kelly) Erasmus was operating a studio together with a photographer named Carr (possibly Charles Carr) at 8 Macklin Street, Derby, although still living with his parents at 12 Kensington Street, Derby St. Werburgh (Census).    Erasmus Bostock married Hannah Hughes (born c1862) at Derby in 1883, and had two children, Erasmus James (born c1884) and Eveline Mabel (born c1889).  In April 1891 (Census) the family were living at 102 Drewry Lane, Derby St. Werburgh.

The school photograph shown below, taken in the early 1890s, suggests that by that time Bostock was operating on his own as a "Photographer of Schools, &c.".  By 1895 Charles Carr, too, had his own studio at 39 Babington Lane, Derby.  The census of April 1901 shows Erasmus Bostock living and working as a photographer in Nottingham, and later directories show him as a photographer at 24 Moorgate Street (1904) and 32 Maples Street (1913-1914) in that city.
