John Cox was born c. 1846-47 at Vale House, Tintwistle, Cheshire, not far from the village of Hadfield in Derbyshire, son of cotton weaver Joseph Cox (1821-1877) and his wife Ann (1819-1881).  In the mid-1850s the family moved to Hadfield where John's grandfather had a grocery business.  In 1871, while still living with his parents at 135 Hull St, Glossop, John Cox described himself as a photographer.  He married Ann Howard in 1877, was operating a studio in Hadfield at least as early as 1878.  By 1881, his studio was located at 90 Station Rd, Glossop Dale, where it continued until 1891 and a change of address to 109 Station Rd, Glossop.  John and Ann Cox had three sons and three daughters.  He died in 1894, after which his widow Ann moved with the children back to her home town of Ashton-under-Lyme, Lancashire.
