James Robert Board was born at Ramsbottom, Lancashire, son of a policeman Robert Amos Board and his wife Mary Eliza Whittaker.

According to a review of a book on Board's photographs on Bygone Derbyshire, Board originated from Sheffield, where he may have worked and trained at a photographic firm called Watsons.  J.R. Board was in Derby by 1922, and operated a photographic studio at 9 Cavendish Circus, Buxton from at least as early as 1926 until the firm closed in the 1970s.  Picture the Past has images of a large number of examples of his work from many towns and villages in Derbyshire, including dated photographs from 1922 to 1948, some possibly taken by Board's step-son John Meddins.
