Joseph Thomas Sprittlehouse was born at Skegby, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1866, and was baptised there on 25 December 1870.  He was an illegitimate son of Mary Ann Sprittlehouse (often spelled Spittlehouse) and Thomas Reeves.  His mother married in 1870, although not to his father, and Joseph grew up with his maternal grandparents, Henry Sprittlehouse (1814-1888) and his wife Mary Hill (1806-1895).  He started working in the coal mines in his early teens, and was still described as a coal miner in 1891.  He married Sarah Crampton at Skegby on 24 March 1888.

Joseph Sprittlehouse probably started working as a photographer in the late 1890s.  The first record showing him in this profession is Kell's trade directory for 1899, indicating that he was operating from a studio in Mansfield Road, Alfreton.  Adamson (1997) states that this studio remained open until 1907, with additional premises on Station Road, Alfreton in 1905 and 1906.  Heathcote & Heathcote (n.d.) suggest that a J. Sprittlehouse also operated a studio at West Hill in Skegby, c. 1910, presumably the same person, as a carte de visite from around the turn of the century indicates that he worked from both locations.
