William Davies

of Nottingham Road, Ripley

William Davies was a part-time photographer, but nevertheless operated in Ripley over some years, from the mid-1880s until his death in 1900.

William Davies was born c. 1829-1830 in Carmarthen, Wales.  He married Sarah Anne Bailey (1834-1886) at Derby in 1859.  By April 1861 they were living in Chapel Street, Ripley, and William was working as a book keeper to the Butterley Company.  They had two daughters, Margaret, Bertha and Mary Ann, although their youngest child died in infancy.  Davies remained an agent and clerk to the Butterley Company, and the only sign of his photographic work in the census records is his daughter Bertha's occupation, "photographist," in 1891.

Trade directories show William Davies operating a studio in Nottingham Road, Ripley from at least 1887 until 1912.  However, since he died in 1900, it is possible that his daughter Bertha continued to operate the studio in his name after the tuirn of the century.  Several early carte de visites also exist (see below) suggesting that he had premises at various other addresses in Ripley, including Bridle Lane and Greaves Street (Rose Villa Studio).  These were possibly taken prior to the earliest known directory entry in 1887.
