The original spelling of the Lane family was "Layne" and John Layne is the first of my ancestors I have found.  His family came from Licking Hole Creek, Goochland County, VA where he owned a plantation.  His son, William Layne came to Surry County in the late 1700's.

The 1920 Census, Yadkin Co shows Frank Lane, Wd, with daughters Jennie and Mary A.  Also listed is his granddaughter, Nellie E Johnson, d/o Wilda Frances Lane, wife of Thomas William Johnson.  Wilda died in 1908 in childbirth or shortly after Nellie was born, at the age of 30 leaving 4 small children under the age of 9.  The two oldest boys lived with Wilda's brother, John Lane.
 
Frank and his wife, Mary Polly Martin, along with their son Cleveland is buried in East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery, Yadkin Co, NC.  Also buried with them is Nancy E. Lane 1858 - 1943. Nancy has not been identified.

Thomas Johnson first married Wilda Lane, Nov. 8, 1896.  Wilda died at the age of 30, leaving 3 small boys ages 9, 7 and 6 and a baby girl, age 1. Wilda's brother and sister-in-law took the children to live with them. Thomas married a second time to Margaret Baker Bean and fathered two children by her, Ray and Josephine.  The boys born of his 1st wife  continued to live with their Aunt and Uncle until they were old enough to go to work and be on their own.

The old home place stands today as I write this (1999), and looks just as it looked when Grandpa lived there. The house is located on Union Ridge Road, off Hwy #67, in East Bend, N. C., just beyond Union Hill Methodist Church where Grandpa attended church. The family cemetery, Allen--Johnson Cemetery, is located off the same road.
