Sandeman Family Trees & Gedcoms

A couple of times now I've laboriously copied down trees for e-mailing out to researchers. Rather than waste that effort, from time to time I shall place the details here as links. Glen Ralph of Wilmar Library has also done a marvellous job of transcribing records of many Sandeman's, and I have converted these to html and put them up here for everyone to use with his permission. These details come from the 1895 version of "The Sandeman Genealogy" compiled by John Glas Sandeman (from notes, memoranda, and the original manuscript by David Peat).

* Sandeman Genealogy 1895 (edited by Glen Ralph of Wilmar Library)

* Introduction by Glen Ralph to the Sandeman Genealogy

* Descent Index to the Sandeman Genealogy Updated to include 9th generation.

* Alphabetical Index to the Sandeman Genealogy Updated to include 9th generation.

* Sandeman Genealogy 1950: Pages 1-2. A sample only- the first two pages transcribed as an example of formatting.

* Sandeman Genealogy (Kindred Konnections search) (carried out by Glen Ralph of Wilmar Library). Part of the "Sandeman Scrapbook", giving results of an LDS search, with notes from the Sandeman Genealogy (as above) added in.

* Family tree of Frederick Sandeman, b. 1845, d. 1926; m. 1877 Isobel Ogston, b. 1852
(Frederick's ancestry, and the couple's descendants)

A discussion of family tree & GEDCOM copyright issues

Copyright issues relating to the Internet and Gedcoms are tricky things, and not very well legally defined yet. Firstly, to look at the issue of general Internet documents and pictures; just because something's on the Internet, that doesn't mean it's free for public copying and use. It's best to consider that the author retains copyright of documents on the Internet, and if you wish to reproduce that document in any form, in part or in whole, it's best legally and morally to ask the author of that document if you may copy and/or use their materials.

Secondly, to comment on copyright issues as relates to Gedcoms and other genealogical databases and information. Dates, names, places of birth and lists of such details are generally not able to be copyrighted, being a list of publicly known facts. However, a Gedcom (or other genealogical database or html database) may be a creative linking of those names and details, incorporate elements such as diary entries and stories, and be the result of many years of (often expensive and painstaking) work. If you use someone's resources, out of legal safety and simple courtesy, cite that person's details, and their source details (eg. Bronwyn Walker, (address or e-mail), Gedcom, found at (website location)), as a source each time you use that information. I think if your software allows, the simplest way is to attach a global source citation to all individuals in the database prior to merging with your own main database.

Disclaimer- I have no experience in any legal profession, and my comments are by no means authoritative. However, I would ask all people using any resources from my webpages to abide by the simple courtesy of giving credit where credit is due, and citing any information they gain from my sites appropriately.
