The five sections on "Religion and Mutants in the X-Men Universe" that I have composed are intended primarily as a role-playing resource. Each section includes accurate (though not entirely reliable- see introduction below) information about religious beliefs of particular groups, drawn from real-world information. Each section also describes the attitudes to mutants held by those particular religious groups. This information has been authored by myself, based on the attitudes of those religions to various minority groups, or extrapolated from their theological beliefs, or simply drawn from my imagination, where other inspiration failed me. They are not intended to present or reflect any "canonical" X-Men/Marvel positions on religion in the X-Men universe, nor will they necessarily reflect that real-world religion's attitudes to any minority group. Additional information on religious groups such as membership, address, notable figures, or world distribution may also be included.

The information I have gathered and created is intended for use in an X-Men universe, but may also be of use to GMs running a campaign in a superheroic, supernatural, or magical universe, in a modern-day setting. For other genres, gaining a broader perspective of the varieties of religious beliefs may be useful inspiration for forming other campaign settings.

Introduction

The information I have compiled on religion and mutants is intended as a resource for a Champions role-playing game I participate in. Its setting is heavily based on the X-Men (Marvel) universe or world, in 1992, with a good mix of real events (eg. Clinton has just been elected President of the U.S.A). Accordingly, factual information and statistics on groups reflects the state of affairs in the world and the U.S.A. around the year 1992 (most data is from 1989-93). As our characters have their base in San Francisco, this city's religious groups receive particular focus.

In our game-world, approximately 1 in 25,000 Americans is a mutant (in the 70's the statistic was 1 in 50,000). Those with minor or obscure powers (eg. having the power to never catch the 'flu) may not be aware of their identity as mutants. Across the world, Caucasians, particularly those of Anglo-Saxon descent, have this high incidence of mutation occurring. The proportion of mutants in the population of predominantly non-Caucasian countries is much lower. Whether there are racial/genetic factors, or environmental factors, or some other factors responsible for this trend is unknown in the game-world. In actuality, the GM has created this explanation to reflect the comic book tendency for most heroes and mutants to be white Americans or English. This distribution affects my presentation of religious attitudes to mutants. For example, Chinese or Indian religions may view mutants as more exceptional, American religions may view them as more common, and perhaps more of a threat.

Although I have, in the main, strived to represent various religions and religious groups in a realistic manner, on a few occasions factual details have been altered or added to create a religion more suited for a role-playing setting. This has been done primarily in two sections.

In the section "Religious Groups in the U.S.A.", some religious figures listed may be fictitious, some religious groups in the U.S.A. that are defunct are listed as active, and some complex doctrines have been slimmed down. Be warned; if a group's beliefs seem particularly weird, they are almost certainly real-world doctrines, and not my invention. Truth can be stranger than fiction, as they say.

In the section "World Religions", theological doctrines have been generalised (as is necessary for such a broad overview), and differences between religious subgroups have been slightly exaggerated to provide a richer range of attitudes to mutants. These changes are all intended to create both a simpler, and a more interesting religious world for role-playing purposes.

No offence is intended to any religious group or individual. However, if any readers feel I have misrepresented a particular group's beliefs, or have hypothesised an attitude towards mutants that seems particularly unlikely for that group, I am happy to consider any constructive criticism.
