Richard Arey
by Susan Brooke
Feb 2023
Richard Arey was probably born about 1650 possibly in England. (1) He married Sarah Marchant sometime in the early 1670's since his first son was born in 1677. (2) We know the name of his wife from the birth register for his son Richard. That record stated that Richard was the son of Richard Arey and Sarah, the daughter of John Marchant. (3) We know he had a brother John Arey who died in 1675. (4) He died 14 Feb 1688 in Edgartown. (5)
Sources
(1) His supposed parents married in 1643 and his father was in a lawsuit
in Salisbury, MA as early as 1646, but did not settle in Edgartown until 1652.
His supposed father, Richard "Ayre" of Wappingwall, married Elizabeth Crouch in
Stepney, Middlesex, England and there are baptisms there for some children who
may be their children, but not one of them was named Richard or John, the two
known children of Richard Arey Sr. Also, a Richard "Ayre" of Whitechapel
married Elizabeth Hughs in Stepney in 1655. He was 50 years old at that
time and his wife a widow aged 40.
Our Richard Arey's father, Richard Arey
was in New England by 1647, but he was a mariner and his wife and children could
have been back in England at that time, so it is possible he was the Richard
"Ayres" baptizing his daughter, Rebecca in 1649.
Richard Crouch, the brother
of Elizabeth Crouch, named his sister "Elizabeth Ayres" wife of Richard Ayres,
in his will of 27 Oct 1660. The wife of Richard Arey Sr. was known as
"Goodwife Arey" in Edgarstown and was still alive in 1665. Her given named
was never mentioned. Elizabeth "Eyres" wife of Richard "Eyres" of
Shadwell was buried in Saint Dunhan, Stepney, Middlesex, England in 1662.
She was clearly not the wife of Richard Arey, Sr. who was living in Edgartown.
There seem to be more than one man named Richard Ayre attending the church
in St. Dunstan, Stepney, England in the 17th century.

The first mention of him in New England is found in the files of the Salem
Quarterly Court for 1646 and 1647 when he was of Salisbury and was sued by Mr.
William Winsley of "Salsbury" and Mr. Tristan Coffin of "Haverell" for his
failure or refusal to transport a hogshead of beef to Boston in a vessel owned
in part by Richard Codman, with whom he was associated in business, and in part
by the town of Salem.
Apparently Richard Arey was a resident of Salisbury as late as 1649, for on Feb. 24 that year, suit was entered against him in a court held at Salisbury, b y John Sanders and Robert Pike, on a claim of indebtedness (Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, vol 1, page 165.) About this time, he appears to have moved to Gloucester, and soon thereafter he contemplated on settling in New London, Conn; for in 1651 a grant of land in the latter town was made to "Richard Aerie, who was from Gloucester, mariner." His right to this land, however, was forfeited in accordance with the rule that lots must be built upon or fenced within six months after the grants were made. Although he never became a resident of New London, he was frequently there in subsequent years, most notably in 1667 and early in 1669, probably in connection with his coasting business.
Instead of settling in New London, he took up permanent residence in Martha's Vineyard, in what was later the town of Edgarton (from July 8, 1671) which at his time was known as Great Harbor, or "the town of the vineyard." There, on Dec. 17, 1652, a house lot of eight acres was granted to him, situated "between Mr. Burchard's and Thomas Daggetts," with its southern line about at the harbour breakwater.
