There were two Edward Bates who have been confused in the Bates genealogy,
one from Boston, Lincolnshire, England and the other from Lydd in Kent Co,
England. Our Edward Bates is the one from Boston who married Lydia Fairbanks and
possibly was an apprentice of Thomas Leverett. He possibly came over with Thomas
Leverett around 1633.
He was admitted to the First Church Nov 1633. Perhaps made a freeman March 9,
1636/7. "He seems to have been a follower of Mrs. Hutchinson, as he, with 57
others, men of Boston, was disarmed for heresy, and "for fear they will make
some sudden eruption." This decree was issued Nov. 29, 1637, and he is then
called of Boston, where he evidently died.
