Elisha W Cade

We know Elisha W Cade was born 2 Feb 1800 from the celebration of his 80th birthday in 1880. (1) The family moved from Gloucester County, NJ to Clermont County, OH by 1806.  When Elisha was 16 his father came to the rescue of two orphaned girls who were daughters of his friend, Jeremiah Foster.  The younger sister was Mary Foster and she was about 12 years old.  Mary was a witness for Elisha's father on a couple of deeds in 1818, so she may have been living within that household.  They married on  1 Oct 1822 when Elisha was 22 and Mary Foster 18. (2)
Elisha was listed in the tax and census records of Ohio Township in Clermont, OH through 1838 but not listed in the 1840 census. (3) Elisha's wife Mary may have died about that time and he may have moved to Scott County Indiana. He married Frances Christie in Scott County on 11 Aug 1842. (4)  The mother of Frances Christie was Malvina Cade who was a daughter of Samuel Cade, a possible brother to Elisha's father, Thomas Elby Cade.  In other words Elisha may have married his first cousin, once removed.
Elisha W Cade is on the tax records of Scott County beginning in 1844. (5)  In the 1850 census for New Frankfort, Scott, IN he was listed as a wagon maker.  He already had four children with Frances Christie by that time, and there is also an older daughter named Sarah, aged 17, living with them. (6) In 1862 he purchased Lot 4 in Block 2 in the town of Austin for $300. (7) He had ten children with Frances Christie by 1866 and in 1863 his son his son Samuel B Cade had died from injuries fighting in the Civil War and in 1865 Elisha took in his two children who were ages about 6 and 9 years old. (8)  He had a houseful of children.
In 1844 he and Frances sold some land to their two youngest children, Elizabeth and Rhomie, with the provision that they care for their parents until their deaths. (9)
Elisha W Cade died 7 Jun 1899 at the age of 88/89 years old.
It is not known how many children he had with his first wife, Mary Foster.  Elisha was named guardian for the children of his son Samuel B Cade.  Phebe Cade married David Harbaugh in Jefferson Co., IN in 1848 and was living in Madison, Jefferson Co., IN in the 1850 census.  The only other Cade in the county in 1850 was Samuel B. Cade who was married to Elizabeth and had a Priscilla Cade living with him, most likely his sister.  Sarah Cade was living with Elisha W. Cade in 1850 in Scott Co., IN.  She married a Jesse Vest in Scott Co., in 1851.  However in later census records she lists her mother as born in France.  And her date of birth was July 1832.  Priscilla Cade was born in March 1832.  Sarah may have been a foster child.  A Bethemus Cade married Margaret Spores March 15, 1849 in Jefferson Co., IN but the 1880 census for Gratz, Owen, KY indicates he was born in VA about 1825.
Elisha W. Cade's wife, Mary Foster, had been an orphan taken in by his father when she was about 12.  He probably opened his home to orphaned children. His obituary says he was the father of 22 children.

The Chronicle, Scottsburg, Indiana
12 Feb 1880

"Mr. Elisha W. Cade celebrated his 80th birthday on the 2nd of this month, and strange as it may appear, that among the many presents, no a single pair of spectacles or a cane were presented.  The fact is, he never used glasses, and has not much use for a cane; although he had atained his four score of years he contemplates resuming his usual avocation as soon as spring opens.

"Our oldest citizen, Elisha W. Cade, died at his home here last Friday evening at the ripe old age of 88.  After funeral services at the M. E. church his remains were interred at the Whitson cemetery on Sunday.  Mr. Cade was one of the oldest men in the county and has resided in our town for 35 years.  He was particularly hale and active for a man of his age and was the proud father of 22 children.  May he rest in peace.
