John Cheney

Based on the date of birth of his first child, John Cheney was probably born
about 1600. According to the records of Rev. John Eliot of Roxbury, John Cheney
immigrated to the colonies in 1635 bringing a wife and four children with him.
(1) The first three children were baptized in Mistley, Essex, England to John
Cheney and his wife Annie. (2) He married Martha Smith in Lawford, Essex,
England on 3 Mar 1630/1. (3) He was recorded as a shoemaker in Lawford, Essex,
England and as noted in the inventory of his estate, he was a shoemaker in the
colonies. (4)
By 1636 he was living in Newbury, MA where he recorded the
birth birth of his son Daniel. (5) And he had 3 acres of land by 1638. (6)
John Cheney died 28 Jul 1666 in Newbury and an unnamed daughter died in November
of that same year. (7) He had written his will on 5 Jun 1666 naming his
wife and children. (8)

He married at Lawford, Co. Essex, on 3 Mar 1630/1, as his 2nd, to Martha Smoithe. His wife Martha was living on 31 May 1684, when appraisers of her son Nathaniel's estate stated she was yet living.

John Cheney of Lansdale and Mistley evidently was identical with the John Cheney, immigrant to Massachusetts. Mahler points to the will of George Landalle, dated 16 Nov 1629, which mentioned "John Chenye shomaker now dwelling in my house in Lawford" and made arrangements for his future accommodation; John was also appointed as executor. The inventory of John's estate included tools and supplies of a shoemaker (p 206). The occupation, wife, and children's names all confirm his identity.

"John Cheney, the immigrant ancestor, was born in England. 'John Cheney,' wrote John Eliot, the famous Indian Apostle, minister of Roxbury, 'he came into the land in the years 1636. He brought 4 children Mary, Martha, John, Daniel. Sarah his 5th child was borne in the last month of the same year 1636 called February. He removed from our church to Newbury the end of the next su'er 1636. Martha Chany the wife of John Cheny.' At Newbury John Cheney prospered. His allotment of land was large. He had a good stand in the 'old town' and on shore and elsewhere. He had three acres granted, June 19, 1638, at the westerly end of the great swamp behind the great hill; on August 25, six acres of salt marsh; then a parcel of marsh with little island of upland on it, about twenty acres, little river of the northwest, formerly a part of the calf-common, assigned to him July 5, 1639. - He died July 28, 1666, leaving a will dated June 5, 1666, written in his own hand."
