(3) Family Lore

Written by Lavinia Church Beane (daughter of Parley's son, Samuel) in January 1912, and addressed to Flora Church Reynolds, great-granddaughter of Parley Church through his son, Shubal.
"Isaac Church and wife, maiden name unknown, were married in 1736. His age 82, hers 104 at death. Their oldest son Asa was born at Mansfield, Conn., June 25, 1738, died July 21, 1824, very suddenly, sitting at the table in Waterford, at age 86. His wife Abiah Pease was born July 1742 at Martha's Vineyard, the only daughter of Job Pease by his first marriage. He was a sea-faring man. Their son Perlye (or Parlley) was born May 7, 1764, at Mansfield, Conn., and died April 5, 1853, at Waterford, at age 89. Zerviah (Jacobs) Church his wife was born May 1, 1762, at Mansfield, Conn.; died at Waterford Sept. 15, 1835, age 73. Isaac Church's son Asa, my great-grandfather, served in the Revolutionary War and being called home by sickness in his family, his son Perley while yet in his teens, took his father's place and served his time out, 5 1/2 months but not quite long enough to secure a pension, 6 months being required 60 or 70 yrs. ago. Perley Church and wife came from Hanover, N. H. to Waterford, in the fall of 1796 and first lived on the E. G. Carter farm on the Connecticut River, with several removals before my father bought his home farm in 1838 when he died. I remember my grandmother Church tho I was but 5 yrs old when she died. Grandfather remained with us 18 yrs. longer. I am giving you 5 generations back as far as I know. I think the facts and dates are correct, you can arrange them properly."

Flora Church Reynolds was applying to the DAR.  The information about the name of the father of Asa Church is apparently incorrect.  Lavinia Church was a great-granddaughter of Asa Church.

Parley, the 2nd son of Asa Church, applied for a pension for his service in the Revolution.  He states, "in the summer of 1779 he entered the service of the United States, as a substitute for his father Asa Church, who was drafted into the company commanded by Capt. Woods and regiment commanded by Col. Wells of the Connecticut Militia."

Asa Church is listed as giving patriotic service in the DAR Patriot Index
