East Middletown, dau of Nathaniel (Daniel, Nathaniel, John).  She d. June 26, 1780.  He was chosen deacon to take the place of his brother Ebenezer and d. Aug. 8, 1809.  He lived on the homestead of his father and kept the public house on the old bridle path from Providence to Middletown.  The hotel sign is preserved. (1908)."

John CLARK, jr., third son of John, married Sarah WHITE February 1st 1744. He lived on the homestead of his father, and kept an ordinary or public house on the old bridle path from Providence to Middletown. The sign is still in existence, being in possession of Stewart D. Parmelee. He was chosen deacon of the church, to fill the vacancy caused by the removal of his brother Ebenezer from the parish, and was quite prominently connected with building the first meeting house. He died August 8th 1809, aged 94 years. Sarah, his wife, died June 26th 1780, aged 56. Their children were: John, born March 15th 1745; Mehitable, born November 14th 1746, died November 1st 1747; Sarah, born February 20th 1747-8; Mehitable, born April 8th 1750; Daniel, born October 13th 1752, a Revolutionary soldier; Esther, born October 2d 1754; Elijah, born November 1st 1756, died in the army in 1777; Desire, born June 12th 1759, died same day; David, born May 23d 1760; Lydia, born April 13th 1763; Moses, born November 23d 1766.

In the name of God Amen, I John Clark of Chatham in the County of Middlesex and State of Connecticut being in usual health & of a sound mind and memory thank be to God therefor, but calling to mind my own mortality as it is appointed unto all men once to die do make & ordain this to be my last Will & Testament.

First.  I commend my Soul unto God who gave it & consent my Body to the Earth (to be buried at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named) hoping in the mercy of God and Merits of Jesus Christ for a glorious Resurrection thereof to everlasting life and for the better settling and disposition of such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with I will that it may be disposed of in the manner & form as follow Viz.

Imprimis I will and order my Executor to pay fulfill and deliver to my well beloved wife Hannah all & singular the matters and effects described in a certain Writing (called a jointure) lodged among the papers of the Revd. Mr. Parsons late of East Hampton in Chatham dec'd said Writing being executed in due form by me and said Hannah before our marriage and is to be considered to be in full for her right of Dower in & to my estate.

Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Mehitable Forty Shillings L Money

Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Esther three pounds ten shillings L Money

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Lydia Eight Pounds ten shillings L Money.  The aforesaid sums to Mehitable, Esther & Lydia are considered as sufficient to make what they had before received equal to what my oldest Daughter Sarah had set out to her at marriage.  The three Legacies aforesaid are to be paid by my executor within the space of Two Years from my decease.  I will and order that what shall still remain of my estate after my debts & funeral charges and the above said Legacies and Dower are paid & discharged be equally divided among my sons and Daughters viz to my son John one eighth part  to my daughter Sarah one 8th to my daughter Mehitable one 8th  to my son Daniel one 8th  to my Daughter Esther one 8th  To my son David one 8th  to my Daughter Lydia one 8th  To my Son Moses one 8th and I do hereby constitute & appoint my son David sole Executor of this present Will and Testament utterly revoking all former Will and Testaments by me made verifying this and no other to be my last Will and testament  In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of Mary 1797
