Assuming he was about 21 when he married, Dixie Coddington Sr. was born about
1665 in Holmpatrick, Dublin, Ireland, the oldest son of Nicholas Coddington and
Ann Dixie. He is named as "the eldest son" in his father's will. (1) When
he married his first cousin, Anne Coddington, on 22 Dec 1686 he was listed as
"of Holmpatrick, Dublin, Ireland" and Anne was listed as "of Clonnary, Kings,
Ireland. (2) According to Trinity College Alumni Directory, their son John who
was named eldest son in his father's will, was aged 18 when he enrolled in
college on 12 Apr 1708, making him born about 1690. (3) His son Nicholas
Coddington matriculated 28 Mar 1712, aged 18. And his son William
Coddington also attended Trinity, matriculating 24 Jun 1715, aged 17. (3) Dixie
Coddington, Esq. was involved in several court cases. two of which involved his
brother Henry Coddington. (4)
Dixie wrote his will on 4 Jul 1727 naming 1st son John, wife Anne, son William,
son Nicholas. son Dixie, son Henry, daughter Elizabeth, daughter Jane, brother
Henry Coddington, uncle Finglass. (5) The will must have been probated in 1728.
His memorial tombstone states that he died 22 Jul 1728. (6)

Oldbridge House and the Slave Trade
Dixie Coddington was born in the year 1665. He was the son of Nicholas
Coddington and Anne Dixie who resided at Holm Patrick in Skerries in Co. Dublin.
Records show that Dixie Coddington`s Grandfather, William Coddington, had been
resident at Holm Patrick in the mid 1650`s and had held the position of High
Sheriff of Co. Wicklow in 1656; William died at Holm Patrick in 1657.
Dixie Coddington took part in the Battle of the Boyne on the side of King
William in 1690 and in 1695, while still residing at Skerries, he held the
position of High Sheriff of Co. Dublin. On the 15th February 1710, John
Coddington, son of Dixie, married Frances Osborne of Dardistown Castle, near
Julianstown Co., Meath and in 1725 John Coddington was made High Sheriff of Co.
Meath.
Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry. by Burke
The lineage quoted in Burke's book, The Genealogical and Heraldic
History of the Landed Gentry, may be incorrect on some counts.
There is no mention of son Nicholas. Robert Coddington is not
named as a son in his father's will. The Will of Dixie Codding of Holm Patrick b. 1665 names children: son William son Nicholas son Dixie son Henry daughter Elizabeth daughter Jane |
