According to the 1850 Federal Census for Hinds County, Mississippi, Richard J Coorpender was born in North Carolina in 1820. The dwelling listed right after Richard and Anne's, in order of visitation by the census taker, was M.M. Coorpender's. This means they were neighbors. The following Coorpender's in M.M. Coorpender's home were also listed : William, aged 25, Lewis, aged 21, Mary, aged 19, Caroline, aged 16, Robert , aged 14, McKinney, aged 12 and Julia, aged 6. Also, in M.M. Coorpender's family she and William were born in North Carolina and all the rest were born in Tennessee. Since Lewis was born in 1829 this means that the family moved from North Carolina to Tennessee in 1828 or 1829. (1) No document has been found that states who his parents were. Instead we have to rely on three sources. One is a deposition by Richard's daughter Carrie where she says under oath that Jane ( Coorpender ) Duggan was Richard's sister. (2) Another is the death certificate of Julia ( Coorpender ) Duggan which states that her mother was Matilda Fenner and thus Richard's mother. (3) The last is the marriage of Lewis Coor Pender and Matilda M. Fenner in Raleigh, North Carolina on Feb 22, 1819 which proves that they were his parents. (4) On November 7, 1892 Anne Coorpender applied for a widow's pension based on Richard J Coorpender's service with McMahon's Tennessee Volunteers in 1836 in the 2nd Seminole War. He was only sixteen years old when he served. (5) (6) (7) He was married to Mary Anne Herron sometime before 1850 since in the Federal Census of 1850 for Hinds County MS, they are listed as being married. There is no marriage record but by referring to her obituary and to her daughter Carrie's death certificate we can infer that they were married. (8) By 1854 Richard J Coorpender was living in Seguin, TX along with his mother. In the 1854 tax list for Guadalupe County, TX he is listed as an agent for M. M. Coorpender and it remains that way until her last listing in 1872 where she is referred to as R. J. Coorpender's mother. (9) (10) The 1860 Federal Census lists the value of his real-estate at $ 3500 and of his personal estate at $15,800. (11) The Civil War seems to have taken it's toll. By 1870 the Federal Census shows that his real estate shrunk to $ 2415 and his personal estate to $ 1300 (12) and by 1880 he was reduced to taking in boarders. (13) We have no record of his death. There are no tax lists for Guadalupe County from 1878 to 1887 so we can only surmise that he died sometime between 1880, when the census shows that he was alive and 1888 when his wife Anne was listed without him in the 1888 tax list. By 1867 he was unable to pay $2,226 to M M Coorpender that he borrowed from her in 1859 and 1860 and he is forced to sign a deed of trust. Deed records continue to show that he and his son Junius pile up debt to pay for their farming operations from 1872 to 1875 and that almost of of the land that they own is sold to either receive or pay off that debt. There are no further transactions up to 1881. R. J. died around 1889 leaving no will and Mary Anne died in 1907 also leaving no will.
