"Dr. William Wall Dabney, of Lodi, Montgomery County, Mississippi, writes: 'My great grandfather, John Dabney, was born in Albemarle County, Virginia. He served in the Revolutionary War, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis, at Yorktown. He emigrated to North Carolina, Chatham County, and settle on Deep River, where he married Miss Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of Lemuel Smith, Sr. of North Carolina. He represented his county in the Legislature for fourteen years, and subsequently removed with his family and other relatives to Middle Tennessee, and bought land, and settled three miles from Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee, where he lived and died, at the advanced age, between eighty-five and eighty-six years, respected and beloved by all who knew him.'
