According to his obituary he was in his 59th year on December 5, 1831, meaning he was born almost certainly in 1773. (1)  His parents were married in Scotland in the 1760's, but we do not know when they came back to Virginia. Hence we don't know where Hume was born.  He married Millicene Young in Granville County, NC on December 8, 1797. (2)  He served in the War of 1812  from August 30th to September 13, 1814 with Captain William Birchett's company of Virginia Militia. (3) Along with his siblings he received a distribution of land from his father, James Field, in April of 1816. The order book stated that Hume R Field was the heir and devisee of Dr. James Field. (4) This distribution stemmed from a nuptial agreement between his parents, James Field, and Margaret Schaw, and her mother, Margaret Borthwick.  The agreement was entered into the records in Edinburgh, Scotland on Nov 4, 1771.  It obliged Dr. James Field to distribute his lands to all the children of his marriage to Margaret Schaw.  It also included the will of James Field.  However, the will did not name anyone else other than his wife who was named executor. (5) Judge Hume R. Field was the first Judge of County Court of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He served from 1821 to March 22, 1827. He was also one of the first vestrymen of the Christ Episcopal Church and a resident trustee of the University of Alabama. He owned considerable property in Tuscaloosa. This may have been a result of his close association with William Crawford who was a land office inspector of Alabama, Secretary of the Treasury under president James Monroe and who ran for president in 1824. Hume R. Field was an elector from Alabama who voted for Crawford. (6)  Hume R Field died on December 5, 1831 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. (7)  He was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Tuscaloosa on December 6, 1831. (8)  He did not leave a will.  But on January 16, 1837 there was a distribution of the lands of Hume R Field to his heirs.  This included Nancy Star whom he had married in Tuscaloosa on August 15, 1827, as well as his daughter Jane Field.
