Amariah Foster

The proof of the parentage of Jeremiah, Mahlon and Chilon Foster as sons of Amariah Foster is complicated.  The first step is to show that the three men were brothers.  That argument involving land transactions can be seen on the page for Jeremiah Foster. It is also important that when Jeremiah Foster married in 1782 he was "of Mount Holly." The second step is to show that Chilon Foster was the son of Amariah Foster. That argument involves understanding that Thomas Foster, the father of Amariah Foster, lived very close to the William Shinn and William Budd families.  Three of the children of William Budd are very closely connected to the Foster family.

Thomas Foster, the father of Amariah Foster, was a Quaker baptized in 1703. He showed up in the records in 1736 when he and Thomas Shinn were witnesses to the will of John Shinn. (1) Thomas Foster obtained 65 acres of land in 1746 in Springfield, NJ and Thomas Foster and William Shinn lived on adjoining land. (2) These names are important as the Shinn family appears again in many records.  A Joseph Shinn, for example, was having his children baptized in St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Mount Holly on the same day that Thomas Foster and his wife Mary had five of their children baptized. (3) Thomas Foster's sons Amariah and Joshua were "adults." Abner, Content and Elizabeth were still under age.
This Joseph Shinn at the baptism was a nephew to Thomas Shinn and he had married Mary Budd. As mentioned above the Budd family is also important in the documentation of the Foster family. In 1781 William Budd purchased land  bounding that of William Shinn which we know was very close to the land of Thomas Foster. (4) Mary Budd, wife of Joseph Shinn, was the daughter of William Budd. In 1803 when Amariah Foster was purchasing some land, one of the witnesses was William Budd. (5) William Budd was also the father of Rebecca Budd.  She married Joseph Lamb and their son, Nehemiah Lamb, married  Lettice Foster, a daughter of Amariah Foster.

Thus the following baptism takes on great importance. Chilon Foster was baptized as an adult on March 2, 1788.  The other people being baptized that day were William Budd son of William, Elizabeth daughter of Joseph Budd, and Mary wife of Levi Budd. (6) Since Methodist ministers travelled to perform baptisms, all of these baptisms are of people living in the same place. And we know William Budd, the Shinn children and Thomas Foster all lived very near each other.  This places Chilon Foster as living in the vicinity of Thomas Foster.  He is most likely a grandson of Thomas Foster: a son of Amariah Foster.  Amariah's brothers cannot be the father of Chilon Foster.  Joshua's children are accounted for and Abner was too young.  And Chilon Foster was the brother of Mahlon and Jeremiah Foster
, all sons of Amariah Foster.
Amariah Foster married Mary Prichett on 15 Jul 1748. (7) Mary was dismissed from the Quaker church for marrying contrary to discipline. (8) Amariah Foster died before 22 Mar 1806. (9)

Three of the Children of William Budd born 15 Feb 1680 married to Elizabeth Stockton

Mary Budd born 9 Sep 1704 married Joseph Shinn (their children were baptized on the same day that Amariah Foster was baptized)

Rebecca Budd born 13 Sep 1714 married Joseph Lamb (their son Neheniah married LetticeFoster, daughter of Amariah Foster

William Budd born 2 Jan 1719 married Suzannah Coles (his son Levi married Mary Woolston in 1774, she was being baptized on the same day as Chilon Foster in 1788)
