According to her death certificate, Sarah Elizabeth Hall was born 15 Sep 1832 in Rochester, Monroe, NY. (1) She married William Pitt Cleveland Whiting on 15 Sep 1852 in Rochester. (2) In the 1855 census of Lancaster, Erie, NY taken on 21 Jun 1855, she and her husband had two children: Lillie (Elizabeth Erickson Whiting) aged 2 and Babe (Jeanette Cleveland Whiting) aged 6/12. Two of her husband's siblings were also living with them: Anna aged 19 and Henry aged 17. They also had two domestic servants living with them. (3) In the1860 census for Brighton, Sarah Elizabeth Hall Whiting was living with her parents and the three little girls (4) while her husband was out in San Francisco, California getting established as a lawyer. When her father died in 1871 she was listed as living in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California. (5) Her husband died three years later.
She was only 41 when her husband died. Her two oldest daughters had married in California and they remained in the San Francisco area. However, Sarah and her youngest daughter moved back to Rochester, NY. Sarah moved in with her married sister, Emma who was married to Edward Harris and in the 1880 census both she and her mother, Emily Walker Hall are living in the household with Edward Harris. (6) Sarah's youngest daughter, Frances, was married in Rochester in October 1880.
Sarah died 2 Dec 1916 in Bellevue, Allegheny, NY and was buried in the Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh in the plot owned by her son-in-law Frederick Pettes Moore, husband of Frances.(7) Her obituary ran in a San Francisco newspaper. (8)

of Emily Hall of the town of Brighton in the county of Monroe
respectfully showeth that Albert G. Hall of the town of Brighton in the
county of Monroe died in the said town of Brighton on the 10th day of
September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy
one, That at the time of his death he was an inhabitant of the county of
Monroe. That he left no will, as far as your petitioner has heard or
been able to discover; that he left your petitioner his widow, and two
children one grandchild his next of kin and heirs at law, him surviving
whose names places of residence and ages are as follows. Sarah E. Whiting - Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California aged about 40 years. Emma Louisa Harris - Brighton, Monroe County, NY aged about 33 years. Sarah Hall - granddaughter of said deceased residing at Lynn, Wayne County, NY aged about 11 years. That the said deceased left real estate of the value of about $3000. Dated Oct 38th 1871 |
